About Me (add information about your business that will help your business be found in search)
I started out as tree surgeon and qualified with an OND Arb, the three year course included landscaping nursery production and of couse plant knowledge as well as many other related topics.
After leaving college I spent some time working in Germany to gain additional experience.
On returning to England during a bleak economic period, I extended my skill base by moving into garden maintenance and then into landscaping, as well as tree surgery.
It was during this period that I developed a passion for transforming large gardens, and over the next ten years I worked alone in 2 to 3 acre gardens maintaining, designing, developing.
Working with wood and stones and plants, and of course hard landscaping materials.
I am experienced at natural stone walling, after many years of practice.
I now have two employees, and I am still lucky enough to spend all my time working outside in the gardens. We try to be as organic as possible when working in these gardens, and will only resort to the use of chemicals after every possible avenue has been explored, and of course after consulting with the home owner, we would honestly prefer not to use them at all.
We are based in Kingswear in Devon and mainly work in South Devon, from Torquay to Kingswear and across to Ashburton.

Preparing a bank for wildflowers

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 10:57 3 Comments

The area to be prepared for sowing wildflower seeds was a steep bank over looking a swimming pool in a secluded part of the grounds of a large block of residential flats in Torquay.

It was thought that the area needed changing to attract more people down to the swimming pool by growing wildflowers and attracting more insects, especially bees, butterflies and hoverflies.…

Plants for life

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 20:04 1 Comment

Plants for life, Next time you decide to buy plants for the garden, take time out to check whether these will assist the biodiversity of the garden. Try not to get swept away by the bright colours and the fancy flower shapes of the heavily cultivated plant varieties.

Perhaps this is a legacy from the garden competitions that occur all over the UK each year, where bright, big and convoluted usually wins an award. But times are slowly changing and many people are starting to realise…

Winter Garden Work in Devon

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 22:00 3 Comments

Like many gardeners in England, I do not hibernate during the winter months, in fact

In many ways I am just as busy, only hindered by the shorter hours and the weather, which so far this year, has not reduced the working hours.

The winter months allow us to catch up on projects that will improve things for the following growing season, where those ideas that occur during the hectic whirlwind of gardening in spring and summer, can be brought into fruition, when all the gardens…

The ice age

Posted on May 22, 2011 at 18:23 0 Comments

One of those crazy lunchtime chats,

The melting polar ice caps got us chatting the other day at work,

The earths wobble was the subject of the day, the cause of the seasonal, and the global  temperature changes, and the earths weather,  as the tilt disperses the angle that the rays of the sun hit the earths surface.

The same phenomenon that caused the invading Romans to grow grape vines on the South sloping slopes in England in the warm concentrated…

Perhaps not a bad thing you couldn't listen to my funny voice!! Anyway, thank you for looking and supportive comments, and yes it is scary.
We have plenty of wildlife towers in the quarry via mountains of discarded wood piles but not beautiful like your construction. Been so busy with work all my gardening interests have taken a back seat but I have plenty of interesting bits and found objects to construct something when I get roundtuit!
I do have a Bee Tower sculpture, my second garden sculpture situated by my studio. I was so excited when I created it. It has hosepipe lined chambers and slate louvres to flash off rain fall but I didn't realise then that bees prefer to burrow their own holes. Lady birds and other small creatures make good use of it though. I like the idea of making something out of drift wood with encouraging nooks and crannies.

Hi John,
thank you for your attention and great comments on the work videos. I really owe the push to Phil Voice. I'd been considering when I read his short post on using videos for art work etc to give a more rounded and interactive view. I've been doing it ever since. My client's love it when I surprise them with a work in progress video update (so far). I'm even adding talk over now. Still feeling nervous and clumsy but getting better with practice. Here's my latest mid development of current work

Hi John, its great to hear from you. Its not an easy living up on the moor and I have been trying to look further a field... if there is anything I can help with in any way, let me know. Cheers.

As to the comment about fencing styles... we are all standing on the shoulders of giants mate. My styles and designs came from better men than me.

Thanks for your positive comment on my mown path photo. It can be chilly on that site but the views which include the Bell Rock Lighthouse on the horizon ARE fabulous. Good to see your photos, I love Devon too and not being a native Scot am often home sick.

John - never made it to the park - bloody half marathon was on on Sunday morning so transport was knackered - got to see Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera and Casa Batllo though so got plenty of inspiration!! Great city - definitely going back sometime!

Hope we can rally the support for this association - I'm enjoying your comments!!

Haha - John I look forward to meetin you for a pint one of these days...and teaching you some decent patter!! I have SketchUp 7 but I am versed in the skills of other software I've been using which, in my opinion is far more in-depth that SketchUp - although SketchUp has a few features unavailable to mine, but I can import SketchUp objects which is neat.
