yes sharp is needed as the wood is so dense even on twiggy stuff, yew is ok being cut most of the year but if you are slack with work in february use it as a nice little job then

have the hedge cutter and chainsaw sharpened and oiled just prior to tackling the hedge and the results will be brilliant

yes i once took a big old yew hedge back to near enough the trunk just leaving a basic framework (went from 8ft wide to 3ft wide) only took 2 years to start and look solid again and gives loads extra space in the garden, a bit like taking privet b...

Better to take a little more time and a perfect result than lots of torn branch ends. Fair enough maybee cainsaw individual branches but dont just cut at it if you get my drift. One of my pet hates is to see split branch ends.
