Moving to France gave me the opportunity to get back to using my hands (which I got out of the routine of doing whilst pushing paper about) and I renovated/built a traditional French farm and built a house.

Marshalls' revenue from continuing operations for the nineteen weeks ended 10 May 2013 was £103 million (2012: £109 million), a decrease of 6 per cent. Underlying activity was in line with expectations but the delay in the normal seasonal upturn due to adverse working conditions, including the coldest March since 1910, reduced revenue in the period. Order intake has recovered strongly since the middle of April to offset the shortfall and the programme of cost…

The "extraordinary level of conservation" of genetic data in the tulip tree remains largely unchanged since the dinosaurs, a study suggests.
The species' genomic change is about 2,000 times slower than in humans, making it a "molecular fossil", a team of US researchers said.
The new information has affected our understanding of flowering plants'…

The Chelsea International Flower Show 2013 has been cancelled do to poor Easter weather, say organisers. The event will now take place in September.
Event organisers are hurriedly making plans to ensure that all participants have enough time to save their plants.
The advice being given is to put all plants into a dark room without water or light to stop them flowering early.
"This method is the only one we know that will ensure that all living matter will be retarded…

I work with social media every single day.
Although I've had to make a conscious effort to remove myself from in front of the computer screen due to overload, even my weekends are spattered with a touch of social interactivity in some shape or form.
Even if I leave the house to go into town or partake in some other activity it's very rare I'm without my web enabled mobile (or should that be smartphone?).
Today's web and media savvy people (and that isn't just youngsters)…

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has accredited the first validation/verification bodies for Woodland Carbon Code (WCC) projects.
The WCC was launched in July 2011 to help give credibility to woodland creation schemes which are specifically aimed at carbon sequestration. The first two bodies to be granted UKAS accreditation under ISO 14065 to audit woodland creation schemes for the WCC are Scottish Food Quality Certification Ltd (SFQC) and SGS UK Ltd.

An interesting article - I hadn't seen it before. You're absolutely right that content is king, which is why I say if you can offer something truly valuable and unique that's not available free elsewhere, then you should charge for it. You have pioneered social media in our industry and I take my hat off to you for doing so. If you believe premium is the way to go, then go for it. As your article touched on, social media is massive but the big players can't make money out of it so something will have to change. Interesting times ahead I think. I genuinely wish you well in this venture. I guess I'm one of those wait and see types, rather than an early adopter, but I'm keeping an open mind.

Interesting that you ask me my opinions on the future of social media in the landscape industry. Should social media be free or paid for - its a big question and really depends on what you're offering. There are (and no doubt will continue to be) lots of forums and information services with free and open access, which is great for the whole industry to share info and advice. With so much available foc if you want to charge for a social media platform, you need to offer real added value and unique content.I think LJN is a great resource and congratulate you on all you've achieved but I'm not sure the new Premium membership will attract a critical mass to make it a success. Making money out of social media seems to be the hardest part as Facebook are finding out. In my opinion, free access will surely result in far more joining, enabling you to build a unique audience that is then an attractive proposition for advertisers and sponsors to target loyal readers/followers. But I'm no expert, when I left the B2B media world 10 years ago social media didn't even exist!

Thank you for featuring my blog, Is your Garden selling your house, Phil. Much appreciated.
