Japanese knotweed is a highly invasive, fast growing non-native perennial plant introduced to the UK as an ornamental plant in the nineteenth century.
Since then it has spread extensively throughout the UK becoming our most invasive species as well as listed in the Top 100 of the World's Worst Invasive Alien Species.
Swansea is one of the worse affected areas of Britain with the unenviable title of the Knotweed Capital of the UK with an estimated biomass of 62,000 tonnes. Chemical treatment costs have been approximated at £9.5 million for Swansea alone and would take 50 years to control at the current treatment rate of 2ha per year.
If left untreated Japanese knotweed can spread unchecked over large areas and become increasingly difficult and expensive to get rid control causing many problems both in urban areas and in the wider countryside
