Hi FolkI am just organising myself to begin garden maintenance on my own; a complete career change as redundancy is looming so time to plunge into something I love. Studying for RHS qualification and just looking for some support and pointers to start with: appreciate any help or advice to prepare myself.
Bradley McAllister said… Hi Ian, thanks for your help, I've paid £72.00 for ads in the Stockport Express, Stockport Advertiser and two other local papers in that area, which should be out this week, I'm also on gumtree and vivastreet which is free but the ads move down the pages on a daily basis.
Thanks for the info on the Tax situation...I'll check into that one...
I've been gardening for five years now in my spare time, friends family etc... I'm not qualified at the mo but I'm volunteering with Hulme Community Garden Centre and access free introductory courses throgh them.. and the Debdale Eco Centre... both of these are online....
My previous gardening experience was with large Gardens around 1 acre so never had to supply my own tools then... I've just had my first enquiry for a jet washing job, which I havn't got a jet washer for at the mo... if you have a jet wash I could forward your details on to her.... my contact details 0161-221-1512/ 07766235095...
from my previous experience of working with large gardens I was going to charge an hourly rate, £15,00per hour... This was to minimimise quoting visits (petrol costs) but with this jet washing enquiry I'm going to have revisit this as you say word of mouth can be quite useful when working towards the bigger jobs... have you consder rates on jobs?
Thanks
Bradley
Bradley McAllister said… Hi Ian, looks like we'll be able to help each other along the way... thanks for your feedback on the website... it's a free website.. wix.com and I'm still considering the pros & cons of free websites... they can't be accessed through google... you can only access them through the hosting provider so not sure how thats going to go down with customers at the mo... people are more likely to trust website they can access through google.... I'm looking into having a professional website done but there really expensive... 500 - 1,500... gonna have a go at creating my own on Dreamweaver 8... but will still have to pay for it to be hosted and don't know how much that costs at the mo... have you looked into the VAT situation?... if were not registered for VAT do we still charge it?... Thanks Bradley

We've just got a big contract for a clearance job and the reason we got it was partly down to our enthusiasm and positive manner our client told us.
ian marsden said… hiya mate,
yeh the work is there, i'm just ticking over, having just started this year... i'm feelin my way about. spent a full season last year working for a large landscape maintenance company following redundancy from a career in the nhs of nearly 30 years! couldn't do much this year due to serious illness, better now though.. looking forward to next season to have a real go at it! one thing i found is dont worry about advertising and all that... jobs will find you once you start working and getting known. we are in similar situations i think, any help i can give just ask, where are you located? i dont think we are in competition ha ha ha!
ian marsden said… hiya ian... just to say hello and hope u do well. i too am just starting out so we have a lot in common. atb
