Hi Laara

Agree with you that most clients will not pay for that level of detail, I can only imagine if they have huge budget, most blanche at modest fees for basic design. I've been asked by my RCO to do the project appraisal this year, I don't have the quantity drawings required, or the time to them retrospectively at the moment, the best gardens I have done I have known the client and garden well before and they already had a trusted contractor who was easy to work with.

I am a student member of the SGD. I attened several cluster groups locally and they have all been very interesting. Lots of help and advice on hand from other members.

Just little confused on this group ; one sentence says need to be member or potential member

Then it says further down : you need to be a member !

I am not a memeber , I was a coresponding memeber when I first finished a portion of training. No connection now.

I have through the years thought of joining / applying.

yet each time re-read all that is involved & have each time come to the conclusion to put the `time` invloved in all preparation into my business instead.

Last year I considered it again and spoke to one of the organisers at SGD ...finding out that they had refined a few things which actually made it more involved etc .again I ask .......Is this really worth the investment , money, time , preparation of extra drawings to support projects I have completed.

When I viewed all details needed : in all honesty on many projects not all these details are completed in a way to use as part of an application : why : some customer /clients would not want to use their budget on this level of detailing . Also depending upon the contractor you are working with , if this is a regular contractor on projects & you have developed a professional / good relationship and provide high quality finish,  some elements/decisions/details maybe agreed on site or during the costing process.

I'll keep an eye on this forum as I hope to add a design service to the business in the not too distant future not that I am personally a designer but I'm hoping to work alongside designers to offer a comrehensive package.

This isn't an organisation I'd heard of before. It will be interesting to find out more.

Hi there, I'm a garden designer in Edinburgh who jointly runs our SGD cluster group. I'm not registered, and am still deciding whether to go for full membership - there has been much discussion up here about whether its worthwhile becoming a fully registered member or not, and I am still in 2 minds. But many designers up here see being part of the SGD structure (whether Student, Friend, Pre-Reg or Full Membership) as a means to being involved in the cluster group. It can be a very lonely business and our group, on top of sharing information and meeting regularly are all good friends now too.  Whatever you think of the SGD - it's legality, validity, usefulness or whatever it can be hard once you leave college to find a way of meeting designers regularly without the cluster group structure. Don't know about anyone else in our group, but it certainly keeps me sane!

I think the amount of 'thought' we all seem to put into whether the SGD is for us, individually or wider industry, is because there is a desire for something like the SGD but we're just not quite sure they are quite what we want or need.

I can see changes happening but only time will see if they are enough of what the industry want or needs. In the meantime I now look for any avenue I enjoy and that supports my business in a way that feels right with my own approach.

That's also why I use LJN too for its open approach to debates and encouragement of the sharing of information, its like an on-line Cluster group.
