In an email to all members, Charles Rutherford has announced he is "stepping down as Chairman with immediate effect as I can no longer represent this Council".

Wonder what happened there?

was just thinking the same!

Intriguing, isn't it?

Oh dear - not good. Notice his e-mail was sent very late at night.

Hmmm bit of a shame I think, but yes the time of it is a little strange, hope its nothing sinister :(

Is it something to do with the lively Forum on the Society's Membership categories? Ultimately there are bound to be resignations over this thorny issue - perhaps this is just the first?

Statement from the Society of Garden Designers (SGD)

Charles Rutherfoord has today resigned as Chairman from the Society of Garden Designers after holding the position for 8 months.

Charles has worked tirelessly for the Society and has achieved much in the time he held the post. In particular, cementing the agreement between the SGD and The Garden Museum for a garden design archive and instigating an exciting initiative with the NGS for 2013.

The Society will be appointing a new Chair in the next few weeks and further details will be issued then.

Vice Chair for External Communications
Society of Garden Designers

As 'Members' are we entitled to a bit of detail as to why he resigned - even if it was for 'personal reasons'?

Haven't seen this - as only a "pre-registered member", I am not allowed access to this forum on the SGD website! Are there objections to the proposed re-categorisation?

Jenny - I too am a pre-registered member and you can view the Forum on the SGD web-site. It is a pretty lengthy forum - I haven't committed the time to reading the full debate but there are certainly some very strong views from FSGD's, MSGD's and pre-registered members like ourselves!

Forums > New Membership Titles Forum > New titles - a serious mistake

This has been leaked to me by an unhappy SGD member

These proposed changes are a ridiculous and retrograde step. 'Master' is a sexist and misleading title which I, for one, will never use.
After the debacle of the Pre-Reg name change a few years ago I would expect our membership to continue to decline if this absurd proposal is forced through.
Members should be identified in only two ways; either Professional or Amateur. Professionals should have successfully demonstrated their ability through the adjudication process. All others should be classed as Amateurs.
And don't even get me started on CPD.

Janine,
I strongly disagree that the term 'Master' is sexist as it is accredited to both males and females in Industry and education without prejudice. The term 'Fellow' (one meaning is man or boy) likewise. The term 'Actor' likewise, etc. etc.
I disagree that the proposed name changes will force a decline in membership. But what it may do is to make the general public more aware of the status of the designer, which surely is the point? After all, it is the public who need to be informed, not us?
I would not abject to being classed as an amateur until I had qualified to be a professional. I am currently a student member who came from Finance. I agree with you 100% about CPD. It should be part of our industry and again, it should be made clear to the public that we undertake CPD as part of our membership.

Computer says no - that although I have successfully logged on, this is a "restricted page and "is not available to you"! I have emailed them! From Phil's leaks above, I would like to read the debate!
