BALI has them, APL has them, most professional and trade bodies have them. What? Annual Awards of course. An ideal opportunity to get publicity, raise awareness of the organisation and reward successful designers.

Should the SGD have an annual awards lunch or dinner? And what categories do you think there should be? And who should be invited - architects, developers, landscapers etc?

What do people think?

Great news! Council should be congratulated on making this happen.
Yes, excellent news. I'm sure the discussions will include categories, but how about:

Best large/small garden(s) (based upon size or budget??)
Best rooftop / courtyard / country (I could go on!)
Best sustainable garden
Most promising newcomer
Design for innovation (be that hard or soft landscaping or other...?)
Most effective planting (in terms of overall impact/appropriateness to site)
Lifetime award (services to landscaping / architecture / design)

Sponsored awards (from BALI/APL/other) - either sponsorship of one of the above or other. This could also generate interest and raise SGD profile outside of the society and build even stonger relations with supporting industries.

I don't think I am breaking any confidences to report that we were discussing such a proposal today in National Council and the resounding opinion of council members was yes for 2011 so watch out for more news to follow soon in Vitis as to the format etc. High profile it will be!

I agree!
As winner of the SGD Student of the Year 2009 I agree that a dinner/event focussing on awards would be an excellent idea, especially as the SGD are expanding the number of categories awarded in 2010. My award has been great as a title, but that was all. I received no assistance from the SGD for PR and they didn't seem interested in promoting it other than amongst themselves. The envelope I received at the conference was as empty as the award. One of the problems with SGD is that the public have never heard of it. Events about awards and the SGD as an acredited body will help raise awareness, and make receiving the award more relevant to the winners.
I totally apreciate all this and count myself lucky to be able to say that I won an award. It certainly makes people take you more seriously. It is also refreshing to see that the Society are going to do more for the winners in terms of PR and in spreading the word to the general public. I would suggest though that the Best Design award should require more in terms of design drawings. If the SGD want to promote good practice then surely a design competition should include layout plans, dimensions, specs and even construction drawings. This would then encourage courses to train their students properly and enable the panel to more easily judge the best designer. I feel very strongly about this, as there are so many badly trained designers out there, many of which turn up at the cluster meetings desperate for help...
SGD Annual awards would provide a double whammy - raise the profile of the SGD plus help educate the press and through them the general public of the value of good garden design.
As well as good design awards what about a booby prize for poor design too?
As for who should be invited. How about all Janine's suggestions plus top council environmental managers and all the MP's from the Culture, Media & Sport select committee.
I agree with Stephen, a 'booby' prize would just be awful! Imagine being the person who received it..... I still think that the criteria for the design competition should be more thorough so that only the really good designers can compete. All courses should be teaching good construction practice. If the SGd set the criteria the courses will hopefully improve their content.

Indeed that is the idea - lots of PR about what and who the SGD is etc etc. I know there will be an influential guest list to get this message across but not too sure about the 'booby prize'!!

Many thanks for the post and I will take your ideas on guests forward to National Council.
Best wishes
Stephen

These are great developments Stephen Fantastic that you are driving these things forward. We will all benefit tremendously. Keep up the good work.
