Avoiding isolation in business 01 February 2012
Do you feel isolated working in your business? For example, even if you employ a few, or many, people to work with you, do you feel alone and unable to share your business problems? * Are there any help groups or techniques you could recommend to others to help them cope with the stresses of run.

(due to a technical hitch, this chat was held on the LJN on-site chat.

(Me = Phil Voice)

Dan Frazer Gardening
Personally, no
Thee are so many places you can get support if you need it. I have a lot of support from friends, rom my fiance

Rowly Hill
Depends on the individual and their circumstances

Adam Pilgrim
i think most people need time 'off' the business - personally i go to the pub on friday/saturday nights - no business from 6 pm friday unless urgent/scheduled

www.mibservices.co.uk
when the pressures on to keep work coming for staff and also when customers pay late and its getting to pay day then yes

Rowly Hill
I'm lucky as I work with my family have exceptional outside support

James Sharp
occasionally, but given that my father was a gardener and several of my friends went to hadlow college with me i find someone to ask or pick their brains, failing that i hit the internet for the answer. Sometimes I wonder if i have taken the right choice on something but then thats part of gaining life experience

stephen Huxtable
yes untill i let people into my business

Kerrie John-The garden design Co
lost you all

Me
Dan, give an example of the places where you can get support?

Mick Gammage
AA meetings twice a week ;)

Dan Frazer Gardening
LJN. Not a cheesy reply, a genuine one. I have got a lot from other people in the trade. There has been tendering support from the Local Authority, and business link runs workshops on developing things like this

Adam Pilgrim
be intrested to see what is recomended here

Me
That's a nice answer Dan and evidenc ethat we are doing some good

James Sharp
i also find with todays tech and the internet, an answer is at the touch of a button, perhaps for some who aernt online this might not be an option

Dan Frazer Gardening
My council and the job centre offered a good run-in to full trading in the early days

roy parker
most my working life i worked on my own . it is hard working alone

Kerrie John-The garden design Co
* Do you feel isolated working in your business? Adam Pilgrim
L/A here never return calls/lose paperwork and never give you a straight answer on anything - i have just about given up with them now - LJN does help as at least you know other people are in the same boat

roy parker
business link was a great help in the early years

Jayne Anthony
When my partners not around in the evenings and there's not much work on in the winter, it can get a bit lonesome, with lack of human company, but I find things to explore - local suppliers who you can chat with and learn something new, for example.

James Sharp
in the early days i found motivation when lone working was harder

Vicky Panther
The SGD run cluster groups for garden designers which I found really helpful. I have left the umbrella of the SGD now but miss the chats at our monthly meetings

James Sharp
one thing i should mention, since taking on more arb work i dont work alone much any more for safety

Me
Who makes a point of making a visit away from their normal environment to change their routine?

Vicky Panther
Why is my name coming up as Me??

James Sharp
cos it does vicky

Adam Pilgrim
in what way Phil?

Dan Frazer Gardening
Who else are you Vicky? :)

Me
Because it's you Vicky:)
I used to have a couple of favourite walks or friends I visitied Adam

Adam Pilgrim
ah right I am with you now

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I am aware of being alone most of the day but I don't mind it at all, but i can understand that some people would find it to be a problem, LJN is good for me to talk to likeminded folk.

Me
One owned a plant nursery...we would have a chat one or twice a week

Stephen Grover
If you design and make gardens, like me, I reckon it's fundamentally a bit of a lonely business - fine when clients are good, but heavy on you when things go pear shaped - often for no fault of yours really. Hard work nearly all the time, so steady communication with others in the business is limite

Dan Frazer Gardening
I do't feel caught in a boring routine so I don't try to get away from it. If it gets stressful I talk with the other half. If she wasn't there I'd vent on here

James Sharp
im lucky in someways, but not in others, that i go to my girlfriends each weekend so can switch off - only work weekdays unless some emergency arises

Mick Gammage
i find talking and communicating via chat or email to other like minded individuals who have their own business works for me along with networking on forums like LJN

T & S Plants
as a supplier we can go weeks without seeing a real customer as most business is now done on the phone or email. Customers no longer seem to want to view what they are buying?

Me
Vicky, is a physical meeting more valuable than a virtual one?

Adam Pilgrim
i think so phil

Jayne Anthony
A physical meeting is important as you can build a relationship with that person/supplier.

stephen Huxtable
love working on my own with radio on

James Sharp
ts - i personally are weary of buying plants without seeing them, but i guess if you find a good trusted supplier thats different

Jacqueline Prout
I work mainly on my own and I also live on my own. I use my local networking groups as a way to meet people and get business advice and help. I also listen to a lot of talk based Radio. Robert Elms and Danny Baker are lifesavers.

Mick Gammage
i think its a mixture of both, after you have met face to face you have a better understanding of that person

Me
But is it possible to be much more open when you can't see who you are talking to?

James Sharp
yes

Vicky Panther
good question Phil, but this seems to be really lively and good discussions.

Mick Gammage
it can be yeah

Adam Pilgrim
problem can be when you live in a village like i do, actually getting to see anyone sometimes

Dan Frazer Gardening
You do get better deals face to face. It's easier to hold your ground and not budge on price over the phone

James Sharp
anonymity is a massive draw of chat rooms in many circles

Stephen Grover
Only have face to face with local suppliers - occasionally with nurseries and such. even a good phone call is better than an on line order - I tend to take that option if offered

Me
I certainly feel that many of the passive chat sessions on LJN are very productive

Jayne Anthony
It makes no difference to me, I would probably be more open if I met the person as I could guage their reactions.

Me
...just it takes a few days, weeks or months sometimes to realise it

Big Dig Groundworks
I will only use suppliers who I have had face to face with first

Craig Hewitt
Great working alone, if something goes wrong you only have yourself to blame, i do tend to talk to myself on occasions. I set myself targets to meet throughout the day or week to motivate myself.

Vicky Panther
Jacqueline I totally agree Radio 2 is my life saver.

Mick Gammage
yeah your right, i find that is the case with ladies Jayne

James Sharp
from experiences of owning a forum / chat site i know users used to value forum based chat more so than chatroom as it was there for all to see and research back on

Me
BTW, don't worry oif chat's moving too fast, it will still be available after we finish

Kerrie John-The garden design Co
All too fast at typing! LJN has helped me over the years when I did feel quite alone at work. I hope that I have contributed to the site. As a professional in the industry LJN has opened up the nation wide professional community.

Jacqueline Prout
Vicky - But someone always calls, or brings coffee in the middle of popmaster:-D

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I'm an unsociable sod any way so working alone suits me :-D

Adam Pilgrim
anyone else rarely see their customers??

Mick Gammage
i see mine most days

Dan Frazer Gardening
I have a client I've NEVER met. Been doing their garden for 2 years

roy parker
yes do not see customers for weeks

www.mibservices.co.uk
your socialable on here Andy lol

James Sharp
on some sites yes adam - some of them barely come back to the house once a month

Me
Andy, I have to admit that much of the time, whilst working outside, being alone was a therapy

Stephen Grover
See my clients most days - they often have to let me in!

www.mibservices.co.uk
I raely see mine always emails or phone calls

roy parker
one customer i never met

Me
How many of us will spend evenings at a desk looking at paper?

Big Dig Groundworks
I see customers every day I there

James Sharp
i usually schedule a face to face with those who i dont see regularly in order to catch up and chat

Jayne Anthony
I really dislike it if the customer is never there when I do maintenance as I like to discuss the garden and check they are happy with everything.

James Sharp
phil - i look at it and walk away lol

Dan Frazer Gardening
Jayne don't you feel email is enough for that?

Vicky Panther
Thats so true Jacqueline lol

Adam Pilgrim
i have had a strange week, two customers have passed away and one is looking at moving...

Me
...how many feel unproductive or even depressed by what seems too steep a hill to climb?

James Sharp
actually - been doing the books this afternoon

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
See some customers each time, others not so much

Adam Pilgrim
I really dislike paperwork, but i am getting better

www.mibservices.co.uk
yeah running a business is a constant uphill walk

Mick Gammage
i think on the hard landscape side of things you need the customer to see what you have done on a daily basis, garden maintanance is different in that respect

Jayne Anthony
Dan as someone mentioned earlier, you may not be getting a true reflection of the customer's feelings if you don't see the.

James Sharp
adam - i had one client pass away once, i approached the estate agent when it went on the market with a letter for the new owner and got the job again after wards

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I really need to look at paperwork for a few days, very behind. april looming!!

www.mibservices.co.uk
commercial is Mick

Adam Pilgrim
the trouble is some of my customers who ARE there can disrupt the schedule badly

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I have that adam, too much chatting!!

Dan Frazer Gardening
true adam!

www.mibservices.co.uk
Ditto Adam, I prefer just to get on with it

Stephen Grover
My kids and I sometimes play the theme to superman in the morning and then run out the door - my powers have usually diminished by lunchtime though

Me
Lol

Jayne Anthony
Adam, that's why I charge by the hour. Some are happy to pay for me to have a cup of tea and chat with them, for the company.

James Sharp
i do get the occasional one who does that, BUT in some inner circles of small village life, chatting to the client is all part of the service and many of the chats lead to a recommendation to their friends

Me
I guess each client has to be measured individually Jayne?

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
lol Stephen

Adam Pilgrim
i actually have a few customers i have rescehduled to days that i know they AREN@t there now....

Jayne Anthony
Yes, I agree.

Dan Frazer Gardening
I don't do long chats with clients. I am in business to maximise my earnings, so hourly would never work. I am happy if I never see clients to be honest! But I do communicate religiously by email or phone/text

Adam Pilgrim
its a good point James, but I am a business, not a charity

Me
Who saves office work until the weekend?

James Sharp
oh indeed, but then most of them are hourly

Me
Who spends evenings in the office

Dan Frazer Gardening
Office work is pretty much 6-9pm every night of the week, I try to do nothing at weekends

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
don't mind a quick chat but when it runs for half an hour i get twitchy!!

Mick Gammage
office work is on going all the time

T & S Plants
we can spend a hour or 2 showing customers around and not earn a penny. Guess suppliers should charge by the hour:-!

Me
...and the office can be the kitchen table

Big Dig Groundworks
be nice to have an office

James Sharp
i dont - weekend is family time only here, unless a tree falls over someones drive and car like the other week... oops

www.mibservices.co.uk
chat is essential but got to be in context and not overbearing on your time

Rowly Hill
Agree Mick - 7 days a week

Jayne Anthony
I do office work as soon as it is needed, usually in the evenings if my day has been busy. I think its better just to get on and do it rather than procrastinate.

Jacqueline Prout
Jayne I took on a maintenance round from a retiring gardener and most didn't stay with me long. I discovered that it was the company and chat the previous lady gave and not the gardening service that they wanted. I am now happy to be paid to chat for a bit.

Stephen Grover
If you're doing project work, then its important to develop some kind of relationship with your client - actually it's probably why they chose (me, or you) in the first place. balance getting too chummy though - keep it professional.

Adam Pilgrim
most evenings there is SOME bit of paperwork to do, all be it quotes to send, receipts to file etc

Me
Steve & Tina..in your case, isn't the 2 hours a potential sale later on?

T & S Plants
quite right Phil, that is our job

James Sharp
i would definately go back to a supplier for plants who spent time talking me through their stock, but im blessed with two friends who own nurseries too

roy parker
you need to talk to the customers but you got limit the time or you never get anything done

Adam Pilgrim
intresting, does anyone think that perhaps village/country cusotmers expect a different sort of service?

James Sharp
yes adam
i find that

roy parker
yes they do

www.mibservices.co.uk
in grass works I find cutting large areas a great time to plan out the next days work etc

Me
How many here on chat have found friendship or associates via a forum online (not necessarily LJN)

Mick Gammage
you do need to talk to your customers as they are the lifeline of your business

Stephen Grover
Quite possibly - wouldn't know really - I'd guess they have more time generally

James Sharp
village life is slower and much more is trust orientated and getting into a new village circle is difficult - its not what you know its who you know

Big Dig Groundworks
If you live in the village they always expect a chat

Mick Gammage
without customers you don't have a business

Craig Hewitt
Definately if your clients are in a rural location they are more inclined to keep you talking.

Jayne Anthony
Clients who are in the corporate world want speed and retired people want chat, irrelevant of country/urban living.

Dan Frazer Gardening
Phil I've made some good friends and trade contacts via forums, real people who I have real meetings with!

Rowly Hill
Me for one Phil..

Vicky Panther
Agree Jayne

Me
I agree Jayne

Jacqueline Prout
I agree too Jayne

Adam Pilgrim
probably true jayne - never thought about it like that

Mick Gammage
i agree too

Me
I also find the corporate client, who's in a rush and tear, will be much more controlling

Dan Frazer Gardening
You can pick up certain types of clients by your marketing and the way you try and encourage word of mouth

Big Dig Groundworks
I have had corporate clients who do like a chat and every time he calls me for more work ends up being a good chat too

James Sharp
what about a corporate person living in the country - here in kent i find a lot of london workers who like to stop and chat and ground themselves to get away from their work too

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
definately Phil

Rowly Hill
I've got a retired corporate - he loves a chat..

Dan Frazer Gardening
Phil, in maintenance I don't agree. I find those busy people don't want to even think about the garden. They hand full control over to me, I ask for payment for extras and they pay, they are always happy with the way things look

Me
How many clients realise the pressures you are under?

Stephen Grover
Certainly more scared of losing control - perhaps not leaving the stresses at work

Adam Pilgrim
not enough i think sometimes Phil

Jayne Anthony
But then he's retired, Rowly, that seems to be the difference. More chilled out.

www.mibservices.co.uk
none more like

James Sharp
oddly enough i dont feel pressure in my work

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
In the height of the season i am very busy, and all my customers are supportive if i have to change days etc.

Me
I think clients soon realise when you are genuine Andy

roy parker
most customers understand

Jayne Anthony
Most clients understand if you are having issues, as long as you communicate with them.

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I think so phil.

Stephen Grover
My clients are often under pressures themselves, we should respect that in each other basically

Craig Hewitt
When we maintain gardens we take control of the garden, and bill at month end plus any extras. Clients just want the hassle of the garden taken care of.

Me
Agreed Mick

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
true stephen

James Sharp
ive gain clients in the past who have let other gardeners go as they dont answer the phone or come up with lame excuses

Me
just thinking similar

Dan Frazer Gardening
agree craig

Me
Oddly, some of the most laid back clients I had were airline pilots

Vicky Panther
I don't either really James. My pressure and enemy is time. If I'm behind with things then I get up at an unearthly time in the morning.

James Sharp
i agree phil - i had one once

Me
Sorry Stephen, I was agreeing with your comment, not Mick

James Sharp
and a cabin service director who was the same

Big Dig Groundworks
Thought I'd missed something then Phil :)

Mick Gammage
you just had me scrolling back to see what i said :)

Me
Lol

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
it's the similar pictures lol

Stephen Grover
Me too

Me
Just going back to the them e of chat
What can we all do to look out for each other?

Big Dig Groundworks
If you never see you customers how do you know what they want you to do?

Adam Pilgrim
a lot of my clients were concerned about what i was going to do over winter - i dropped in on a few of them if i was in the area - some of them know more than i do

James Sharp
with the 'current economic climate' how many of you are finding it hard to develop a client / garden to gain more from it - maintenance wise i mean?

Dan Frazer Gardening
Phil, I think, to support each other, we can arrange occasional local gatherings for a start

Me
How can we let others know that we are here colelctively, or individually, to talk, share and help, without the conversation being a public one?
Agreed Dan...there's been a moderate amount of success already in that department

Adam Pilgrim
email to all members - mind you - already have that

Stephen Grover
Thats tricky, Phil - cant think or type fast enough for an answer here

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I feel that friends on here have got my back, if i had a problem i know i could ask and get good advice, and i would hope people would feel the same from me

Mick Gammage
i thought the same george, if you never meet the person who is paying you how do you know they are happy with the work your doing ?

Big Dig Groundworks
Thought a private group had been set up for that on the network Phil

James Sharp
i do like the email to members phil - it reminds me to stop and look at landscape juice during busy times when i dont go browsing as much

Dan Frazer Gardening
But not just on LJN. I see local landscapers around and if I'm able, I will stop for a blether if I'm passing. Today I saw Scott from Juniper by the road, couldn't stop but called him 5 mins later for a quick catch up

Me
...and would anyone, even if they are really in need, use it?

Adam Pilgrim
several of the recent events i would have attended but sadly they would have cost me too much

Craig Hewitt
I'm sure if they weren't happy with your work they would soon let you know.

Me
Don't think so Geaorge

www.mibservices.co.uk
Dan was speaking to Andy Lawrence tonite he said there was a Glasgow do coming up, when is it

Stephen Grover
I'm a first timer here - Think I should make more of an effort with LJN - as I don't bother as yet about forums etc.

Dan Frazer Gardening
Can make a plan later Brian. He's off to Portugal almost all month!

Adam Pilgrim
a lot of the local gardners veiw me as a enemy unfortunatly Dan - all bar one i used to speak to in the pub - he's avoiding me too now

www.mibservices.co.uk
ok

roy parker
i got same problem adam

Dan Frazer Gardening
adam that's odd. even the guys who do maintenance in my area, even those who have jobs on my street, don't have any of that feeling, and happy to chat

James Sharp
yes i find many are now seeing it as competition

Me
ut that shouldn't really be a problem for anyone
competition is healthy

Mick Gammage
yeah it is

James Sharp
it is

Big Dig Groundworks
Competition makes you better

Mick Gammage
we have the competition under cutting us on a daily basis

Me
Envy or resentment is usually a barrier

Mick Gammage
rise above it

Dan Frazer Gardening
It also gives you connections

Adam Pilgrim
something to do with me apparently 'stealing' customers through my transparent, fixed rate, all inclusive prices apparently

James Sharp
apart from when you loose friends

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
I know one gardener in the village we get on o.k, we'll chat , but then there is another who is a complete di*k

www.mibservices.co.uk
lol Andy

Mick Gammage
you get them in all walks of life andy

T & S Plants
for our customers we put all of their cards on our board, a mini LJN. Many work together and help each other as a result

Me
Ok, as we wind down to the hour...

Craig Hewitt
Competition is healthy-but- the economic climate doesn't help just now.

Mick Gammage
hey come on we started 15 mins late :)

www.mibservices.co.uk
why the time limit

roy parker
i think fixed price is the way to go

Me
If you could give anyone advice on how to cope with business, how would you encourage anyone to share their burden?

James Sharp
i need another cuppa tea and kettle isnt next to the pc lol

Adam Pilgrim
talk to people definately

Jacqueline Prout
Always make friends with the competition you never know when you might need each others help. None gardening related but my hairdressers boiler blew up, he had clients with shampoo, dye etc. He trotted them down the road to another saloon ti use their basins.

Big Dig Groundworks
No sugar in mine James ta

James Sharp
pick up the phone to friends and family first and formost

Dan Frazer Gardening
I think encouraging local networking helps in times of need

Mick Gammage
yeah good answer

James Sharp
suppose u wanna dunkable with that too biggy lol

T & S Plants
its really a small industry, work together so that we all win

Vicky Panther
Its been lovely to chat but I have to go and prepare some visuals for a client tomorrow morning Goodnight all :-)

Mick Gammage
night vivky

Me
Bye Vicky

Mick Gammage
vicky

Me
Thanks for coming in

Big Dig Groundworks
Bye Vicky

Stephen Grover
Bye

Adam Pilgrim
local networking is good, i have gained customers through my suppliers

Big Dig Groundworks
No no Dunkable needed ta

Me
BTW, there's no time limit if anyone wants to continue

James Sharp
good cos i ate them all...
yes i find talking to suppliers a good source of knowledge and clients too

Mick Gammage
are you meaning local as in the BMI cullt meeting adam ?

James Sharp
and cross networking with other trades

Big Dig Groundworks
I go to my Rugby club every week and talk to a lot of business owners there about ideas

Adam Pilgrim
the who Mick??

Mick Gammage
BMI

Me
Can we do more for LJN regional meetings?

James Sharp
ive swapped clients with a painter and decorator in my road before now

Adam Pilgrim
er who are???

Mick Gammage
early breakfast on a friday

Stephen Grover
Local is tricky for designer/makers I think - all a little too reticent to share stuff as there is quite a bit of competition here in N London

Jayne Anthony
I went to a BMI meeting once and felt like it was taking on another job!

Mick Gammage
correct jayne

Dan Frazer Gardening
I wouldn't EVER do BMI

Mick Gammage
you must get referals

Dan Frazer Gardening
A real network you build up from talking is worth much more

Jayne Anthony
I agree Dan

Big Dig Groundworks
Not for me as the eat into my working time

Adam Pilgrim
LJN Lincs meeting - erm me and i think Andy D - although he is actually over the county border (correct me if i am wrong Andy1)

roy parker
i am near peterborough

James Sharp
while i we have everyone in here? and this might be one for the forum if not - but is anyone a member of british standards institution?

Me
I'm working on two dates for regional shows/meetings at the moment
One near Aldermaston and the other in Shropshire

Rowly Hill
Oh err

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
no adam i'm in lincs too, lol

Adam Pilgrim
Sorry Roy - didn't know ;-)

Mick Gammage
what at rowlys house, thats very kind of him :)

roy parker
thats ok

Me
They will be a mixture of network, products and services designed for 50-150 visitors and 10-15 companies

roy parker
i am cambridgeshire

James Sharp

Me
Informal but hopefully educational and worthwhile

Rowly Hill

Me

Rowly Hill

stephen Huxtable

Me
Thanks everyone who's looked in tonight

Stephen Grover

Adam Pilgrim
the flat land here, yes Andy - a 'flood risk' now too apparently

Mick Gammage
why Aldermaston ?

James Sharp
ah right, i pass there once a week en route to the girlfriends

Me
I sincerely apologise for the technical mess up

Adam Pilgrim
no probs

Rowly Hill

Me

Rowly Hill
Agenda for the meetings in March and October

Adam Pilgrim

Craig Hewitt
My first time too-been great

andy@ Doughty Garden Maintenance
sorry phil, lol

James Sharp
recycling and environmental polices... aways makes for a good bedtime chat lol

Me
Nice one James

Adam Pilgrim
i would say how to cut down on rogues in the industry but that may get a little political and need more than an hour

Rowly Hill
H&S - have you got everything you need sorted and up to date...or something along those lines

James Sharp
do we all do enough to use environmentally friendly resources

Me
Rowly...we have a thread you started about chat suggestions
22:02

James Sharp
using local suppliers, cutting down on mileage, recycled material compost over peat, crushed concrete over granite type 2

Craig Hewitt
H&S is usually a subject people like to avoid through fear of unknown

Adam Pilgrim
arrghhh H and S.......
