Working out gravel quantities for mulch?

I normally rely on guess work but thats not really prossional. Is there a way I can work out how many 25kg bags or even the big ton bags I will need to cover a specific size area?

Would standard calculations still work weather using slate chipping, pea gravel or cobbles?

  • That looks good Bigyin

Looks a tad on the generous side when comparing against my tables so you should be safe when using it Chris :)

  • We mostly recommend 3 bags (25kg ones) per square meter for shingle and Slate. (gives about 5cm depth)

As Gary has said cobbles are trickier, but 4 bags (25kg) will do about 1 square meter

  • Thanks for replies here, much appreciated :)

Bookmarked this for reference as info is really useful. Gravel calculator looks great too for the bigger jobs :)

Although not strictly for slate/shingle I use this and it has been very good, could use sub base calculator for shingle

  • I went to my local TP as they were the cheapest for plumb shale told them the size and 4 tonnes arrived, access was kerb side, so tonne bags. the hardest part was digging it out of the bag and in to the barrow!. i did not allow for the planting, used up any extra by spreading.
  • Buy stone is of the largest selection of various products such as Gravel suppliers, Cobbles, Pebbles, Slate Chippings, Rock Salt - wide range to suit the driveway, garden and rockery from buystone.co.uk

    Gravel suppliers Manchester

  • Just slice up the side of the bag michael, makes the job much easier.

  • Although if your in Essex or East Anglia (Ipswitch) area I have used Silvertons Aggregates and will do a free delivery on most products for very good prices from top soil to shingle etc. Can fault them and seem cheaper than Wickes of TP
