I'm rather sceptical about swine flu and its risks. However unfortunately in these days of 'blame and claim' and with your statutory obligations regarting duty of care to employees and sub contractors, I'd put the job back a fortnight as I believe, from what I've read, by then the poor child should hopefully be over it.

This does raise the additional issues of illness and self employment and with most of the rest of my immediate family being in public industry, they have never understood why I am so agitated when a bug is doing the rounds in my family - it costs us a lot of money.
Personally I would forget the doomsday predictions that have been branded about.
We have quite a major outbreak in this area, in fact most of my family have caught the flu with two confirmed cases of swine flu. To be honest it appears that you recover quicker from swine flu than the normal seasonal flu!
I believe that if you are healthy and without any underlining medical conditions you would be fairly safe. However you do have a responsibility to your family and staff.
If it was me, I would advise my staff that the clients young child has swine flu and give them the choice to work on the site or not particularly if they have any health issues. Limit the possibility of human to human contact with the client and his / her family at least for the first week.
However perhaps the best thing to do would be to try contacting the NHS Direct call centre for their advice.
for what reason did he tell you the 'facts'? if deposit taken i guess he is not trying to make excuses.
was it mentioned in general chit-chat conversation? what does he want you to do? be pOsItIvE
If you delayed the start by a week, what to say that their other child or the parents then catch it. Delay it again for another week?
What if you catch it after delaying the start of the job? You could be putting off this job and every other one for weeks if not months.
I would just do it as scheduled and limit any contact where ever possible. If you listen to the Gov. we are all likely to catch it at some point, might as well be sooner than later before the strain gets more powerful :-(
Ive tried contacting NHS direct, they're too busy with SW cases to speak to any non emergency cases, what I'm trying to clarify is whether those unfortunate folk that have caught it have to remain isolated from those that havent and if so how long.
I cant start another project as the others are too lengthy in time scale, to flit from one project to another would be unfair on my clients and it would also compromise the service they deserve and I cant be doing with setting up camp on another project knowing the previous is unfinished.
A deposit has been taken and Ive been fully paid for all materials, whilst at Jewsons on Saturday the yard lads were loading the lorries for my first drop in the morning, I don't believe that by cancelling the deliveries will have some form of effect with any future deliveries as I'm sure Jewsons would want me to take my clients money else where, its just a pain in the arse all round really.
Contacting clients is second nature, I have a few one liners with in my company, one of them being "Its better to make contact than be contacted"
OK so Ive made up my mind, I'll push the project back by a week, the lads have a choice to deliver flyer's for the first half of the week, then work in my house for the remainder, or find there own way for such time.
thanks for your replies people, have yourselves a good week.
