The answer is very simple, Get an iphone, they just work.
All the apps are set to be used on them. Just make sure you put a screen protector on both sides and a good, Imean good, not a copy, builders type case over the top, mine cost me about £25-£30, this may seem steep but after 2 years I have a great protected phone still. This is ater all the battering it took in the gardens.

My phone stays very safe in an Otter Box, would recommend it very highly.
My phone has now dropped out of many a tree i have been climbing onto logs and into puddles and it is still working fine.
Taking it out of the box and it looks like new.
It does add a lot of bulk to the phone, but definitely worth the compromise.
Just wear trousers with leg pockets to carry it in.
I have a Galaxy Note2 which definitely isn't a small phone, but allows you to do a lot of business on.
I've got a sony experia z - waterproof and dustproof.... but I have cracked the screen twice in 6 months! (I only have a simple flip leather case) Great phone, but glad it's been insured when those screens broke! They're bringing out a smaller model which might be a bit less vulnerable. All told I would second the reccomendation that you go for the phone you like best and then invest in a decent case. And insurance!
+1 for the otter box I have one taking care of my HTC One
