What can Landscapers, Designers and Gardeners learn from other professions and industries ?

I welcome your own ideas but to get things started:

Do you think we market ourselves correctly ?

Is our customer care as good as other professions ?

Have you ever thought of "borrowing" an idea you've witnessed elsewhere in business?

Examlple:

I book my car in for a service.

They confirm the booking by text the day before.

They offer a lift to work or courtesy car.

They call a few days later to ask for feedback on the service we received.

Obviously all this is not all necessarily applicable but can we learn from this ?

Please think of a service you have received recently and thought, "we should do that!".

I had a guy round a few weeks back to sort out the failed immobilser on the van (long and annoying story) but he took his HUGE payment via card, just whilst sat in his van. All on a mobile network, very neat. Wish I'd asked who he got the system through, brilliant way of taking payment.

In reply to Daniel Gillings (re the mechanic who brought along his mobile credit card machine to take HUGE payment via card) we use a mobile machine we purchased from www.123send.net  and have found the machine is excellent either for plant sales around our nursery site, for deliveries of plants to customers (rather than taking the risk of credit card payment over the phone) or when we have finished a landscaping job.  I think you can choose from O2 or T-mobile networks - we use O2.  It has become an invaluable tool of the business. Karen - can you enlarge on how you found using these machines ?

What's the typical upfront payment ?

Are you on a min contract ?

How much do you pay for the machine hire ?

What are processing fees - are they in tiers or is it a flat rate ?

Once you get back the Auth code are you fully covered for that amount ?

Any usage issues or other points ?

This is something that I'd like to see in use for us this year. Processing cheques is time consuming and expensive.

This text the day before sounds a superb idea

They will then leave the gate unlocked.

Clear dog muck prior to visit.

Have your cheque ready.

Leave you a extras list if they are not going to be in.

The list goes on.

However how does one set it up?

This discussion started on what can we do in relationship to a car service depot.

Charge like them! if only,My wifes 1 yr old Ford Fiesta 7.500 miles first service £150.00 + parts+Vat its an oil change & check fluids done by the apprentice time to carry this service out 40 minutes.

Gary re the mobile credit card machine I'd have to check exact details but they were very helpful at 123.send. I remember we bought machine outright approx £600 plus they charge monthly processing charge about £10. Merchant bank then charges about 1.5% for credit card or 40p debit card. We already had merchant account for quite a few years with Bank not sure if this makes a difference re processing but 123 will let you know. I understand if you get PIN number input in person by customer pretty impossible to dispute payments - never had a problem. Other regulations re telephone transactions - which should be avoided unless you know customer well. Payment by credit/debit shows in account next day but not cleared for 3 days. I find much easier than getting to bank to pay in cheques though and haven't got a lot of choice but to take cards in our Plant Centre.

Machine has worked well obviously relies on specific mobile network being good in your area. Have had issues with O2 network but that's another story nothing to do with machine. I have2 other credit card machines we use in the nursery but thinking of just getting another mobile machine instead.
