Wix is free quite easy just building a new site at moment.
I made mine using Kompozer
"KompoZer is a complete web authoring system that combines web file management and easy-to-use WYSIWYG web page editing.
KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding."
Its a free download but the project is supported by donations (and ads) (sound familiar) and I think has stalled at the moment (though still available)
I used a company called GODADDY.COM. They have a number of templates you can use. However I had someone build my site for me call Alison Mansel. Her details are on my website. The Godaddy system is good because you can add a host of services you may need in the future. They are not free but in my view very much worth the expense.
Homestead, about £5 a month.
I use Vistaprint - gives you lots of different package options depending on how many pages and features you want. Costs are very reasonable and search engine optimization, although possibly not the best, seems more than adequate for my needs.
The site builder is clear and easy to use, the statistics package seems to work well and there are options for email marketing etc which is quite useful.
For an example of what can be done with their site builder (albeit by a non professional website builder - e.g ME) - feel free to have a look at my website at www.anpservicesspalding.com.
I have to say I toyed with the idea of Vistaprint but after seeing what can be done for free using Wix I have started making one with Wix. It looks pretty good, Miranda, if you've finished yours I'd be interested in seeing what you've created.
Mine was done myself using the tool that came with my online account from microsoft. I pay £11 for 2 years for my domain name and email account. Apparently the text appears out of line with firefox though so I need to revisit it and sort it out a bit.

I came across yola.com which is in partnership with Google. It's all free and very easy to use. Serves my purposes at the moment.
