Website width

I am playing around with my website and need to fix it to a set width so that it does not look different when viewed on different monitors. I was wondering what is the optimum width in pixels so that it is not too wide for narrow monitors, and not too narrow which would result in the page being very long and thin. I currently have mine at 950px but my banner is narrower and so looks odd. I am in the process of putting a new banner on and want to make it the same width as the site and as wide as possible.
