Website reviews do you use them?

Hi All,

We just updated our review section of our web site and it got me wondering if you guy's use customer reviews as a way to increase your sales or even promote how good you all are at your jobs, or what services you offer?.

As an online retailer I think reviews help to give confidence to potential customers. Also as a lesser known brand we tend to rely on our professional landscapers / gardeners comments.

However, it's a challenge to get customers to take time out of their busy schedules to review a recently purchased product. I also find it interesting why some products attract more reviews than others.

I would be interested in the communities opinions on how they achieve their goal of collecting reviews?. We send a one off email three days after purchase, politely asking our customers if they would mind reviewing our services and products.

As said above we have just upgraded the look of our review section and again would be interested in your thoughts on how it presents the reviews good, bad or indifferent? And also are you guy's influenced by other industry professionals reviews? would you purchase a product based on a positive review?

The only downside I can possibly see for a landscaping business would be customer confidentiality. But surely if a customer opted to review your services that would overcome any confidentiality issues.

Here are a few links to our popular product pages and the reviews can be accessed at the bottom of the page.

    Hi Simon

I usually would read reviews as they help me make up my mind on what to buy - in a similar but less interactive way than using a forum.

However would you edit reviews or are they posted automatically as soon as they are written?

Please see here for some classic reviews of a hair removal product from the Amazon website (nothing to do with landscaping - but perhaps helpful to anyone purchasing the product! - and also some of the funniest reviews ever written on the site): http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000KKNQBK
  • I certainly do have reviews influence me quite a bit – unfortunately I have found that some of the reviews that we find online are less than trustworthy. Regardless, I always make sure that I check online to see if things are in fact as they were stated. So long answer abbreviated into a short one – good review (and bad reviews) will certainly influence my decision-making.

  • Nick this is the funniest thing have read for years http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000KKNQBK had to stop reading as couldn't see for laughing,it deserves its own posting!
Simon sorry for going of point, will try and give a sensible reply when I have dried my tears (of laughter)

  • I am in stitches here!! hurts to laugh so much!!!

  • Hi Nick,

Some good points raised in your post, but you as a service provider, would you use reviews as an add on to your web site?. I also agree that when I'm searching for a product, I often base my decision on the reviews. However, I hate to see reviews that are cheesy and clearly produced by the company providing the product. I think the travel industry are mainly guilty of this more than others.

As for editing reviews, I'm happy to confirm that we never edit a review and publish every review we get (It's not instant, as we have to manually upload them to the site and social media). Our review platform is very good and will allow us to reply to the author publicly or privately, if we see fit to open a public discussion.

I am now going to read the link to the funny reviews and enjoy them :)

From a service point of view testimonials would be used rather than a review as such.

It is something we don't currently do but definitely should implement in the future!

Sorry to hijack your thread with the Amazon reviews I posted above - I hope you don't mind too much.

I like www.trustpilot.co.uk although expensive if I had a business that focused as an online retailer I would be checking them out...

  • Hi Nick,

I think the added laughs are great! how did you find them?

I think we could continue to add all things "review" to this thread I've not laughed so much in years lol

I was shown it a little while back at it occurred me to include it when I replied this morning!
I'm afraid I'm not witty enough to have written a review for the product in the reviews!

    Glad you liked!
