  • I would retreat & warn the client. If the nest posed no threat I would leave it. If necessary I would treat it with wasp nest destroyer.
  • As Peter, retreat and warn the client, but if the nest posed no threat I would carry on working and treat the nest at the best opportunity, with the client's permission.

  • I've hit nests twice, both in hedges. To say I "retreated" is an understatement!

No client would expect you to work around that, I just go back when it's been dealt with.

  • Funny, i cut through the middle of one in a tree yesterday.... retreat!?!?! I ran like the clappers!

The wasp man came a few hours later and with a puff of powder they were gone!

I hit a bees nest in a compost heap, ran shrieking like a school girl back down the garden. These were angry angry angry bees! Told the customer and advised no one or the pet dog to go near for a good couple of hours. I returned later in the day to cover the nest with compost and we'll leave it now till they die away in the autumn. Customer happy as she has bees in her garden, other than my dignity and the loss of an hours work (which I've already made up) nothing or anyone was hurt. Happy days.
  • Hedgecutting a laurel hedge for a new customer, and was stung for the 1st time in 15 years. Slightly annoyed couldn't finish hedge, but advised customer and pest control will be out tomorrow to treat. Good job i was using the long reach trimmers as could of been stung worse. Disappointed that i couldn't complete hedge but client happy that she is aware as could of stung her granddaughter.

    cheers liam

    Run for the hills!

Do you find that most customers understand when you find something like this or do they think it's part of the outdoor job role to deal with it?

This season I have come across bees and wasps nests in both cases I leave them be, tell the customer, and work around them. Wasps are usually swiftly dealt with by the pest man and I return to finish off. Bees we leave as they are rarities this day and age and I can generally, due to the nature of how bees nest, can finish it in the autumn or winter. Now a bee swarm that is a different thing altogether. I stay well away from those until they're completely gone!
  • I have heard they sting like begin hit by a bullet as one of my customers turned his loft light on and quickly off again when he realised what was buzzing towards him! I have heard wasps and hornets are attracted to light so be aware in dark sheds as had a swarm of bees trying to build a nest in a customers shed.

When we lived in Yorkshire I once rolled a log over and disturbed a European Hornets nest, jesus they are BIG!! Never run so fast in my life.
We were working in a wood so left them be, didn't get stung and allegedly they are far less agressive than wasps.........not that I waited around to find out.

Once many moons ago, when Noah and I were at school together, I was stung by a hornet. All I can say is that it(insert expletive of your choice)hurt! Having never been shot I don't know about the bullet thing but just thinking about the hornet sting brings me out in the sweats!

My personal philosophy now with hornets is run....run like the wind! (Or just faster than the bloke next too you!)
