Be aware that you HAVE to register in advance if you believe you may go over the VAT threadhold in the near future:
HMRC Guidance:
Supplying goods or services within the UK: If your turnover of VAT taxable goods and services supplied within the UK for the previous 12 months is more than the current registration threshold of £81,000, or you expect it to go over that figure in the next 30 days alone, you must register for VAT. However, if your turnover has gone over the registration threshold temporarily then you may be able to apply for exception from registration - see the section later in this guide for more information. There is a section later in this guide on calculating your VAT taxable turnover.
i am in the same boat, have thought about being registered because of the amount of materials i have to buy, be good to get the vat back, but of course you have to charge it which might make some jobs out of reach, adding another 20 per cent on top
in my opinion it could be a pain, but the materials i buy it might be good idea to see how much you could claim back
Cons - increased prices (but its not a 20% price increase as most mistakenly believe because of input VAT.)
Pro - able to claim back legit vat _ useful on plant, tools, vehicles etc....

Depends on your business - if you are a landscaper the price rise to your clients will/can be less than 20%, because as VAT reg you can claim the vat element of your products back and use to mitigate your requirement to charge Vat. If you're on the Maint side, you are mostly selling 'services' with less chance to claim VAT back except on tools, fuel etc.
