I don't see any problem with this along as the ground is reasonably level and the platform is secure. Is it not possible to do it from inside the hedge, ie standing on the conifers?
by a platform do you mean a scaffold tower or a gravlock type with boards on ?
Hi Chris , I am talking about my big Husky 50, not a small tree climbers Stihl saw. I will not be harnessed and I would not use that saw from a ladder. 2 years ago I would sit in the tree and do it any way, but now I am trying to do everything by the book. Are there regs for platform work?
David, not sure. I was thinking a good sturdy alloy type, with boards on.
How much are you cutting off the trees and how tall are they now? Surely a small top handle saw like a 201t would do for topping conifers?

Chris are you saying just get a 201t and it would make the job safer /easier? I was not sure on the regs for small saws from ladders / platforms.
if you can go for a tower with adjustable casters/feet you can put hand rails on and to be on the safe side you can tie it into the hedge with a rope, max height for a free standing tower outside is 3x the smallest base dimensions. but a tower doesn't take a lot of tipping over from the top i Cannot remember the figurer off the top of my head
Chris, they are about 20 ft
David , Thanks
Make sure you have a second guy to receive the top of the tree - depending on how you set up your site - either on the platform to lower to the ground, or on the ground.
Is there something more complex that your unsure about? Sorry if I sound blunt but anyone with a chainsaw ticket has enough savvy to carry this relatively simple task out. Just be careful, think it through, but don't overthink this. It's simple!
Neil, blunt talk is fine. Ive done this type of job a lot before. Im just wandering where the line is between what I can do legaly with the certs I hold, and when I should have higher qualifications.
Thanks Chris and Neil for your input.
