Using '240/110v electrics' on site

Given a few recent threads, what are the issues of using electrically powered gear on a site, apart from the obvious ones of weather, "shorting" and using RCD's etc?

When does the 240v vs 110v situation come into play - is it H&S related, legislative, insurance company or best practice related ?

We use so little mains powered gear being predominantly on commercial sites, but when on residential site or near mains access, I'm curious as to what we 'should' use. However, we have a petrol genny, that provides both supplies.

What should/could we do ?

  • Most building sites don't allow anything other than 110v. Many people say why don't you just fit a Rcd but I like 110v. Its just a case of plug in and forget it. The plugs are more weather and abuse resistant. No need to turn the cable reel upside down to stop the wet getting in.

For me its best practice and piece of mind.

If using outside should always use 110v for temporary supplies as the maximum potemtial due to centre tapped transformer is 55v , if fixed installation & supplying outside circuit should be protected by 30mA trip RCD.
    Cheers
  • As stated 110v is a requirement on building sites. It's also looks more 'pro' if working for homeowners when they see these big yellow transformers and funny plugs everywhere.

  • Yep building regs and makes sense anyway.
