Unwelcomed at garden center

I get trade discount at a local garden center and is very convenient for me walking distance, and know the staff who are helpfull but found another local one and when asked about trade she was quite abrupt saying I would have to spend a £1000 a year and I just cannot buy the odd little thing here and there.

I was really put off but wondered if you ever got this response when getting trade, I do like to see what I'm buying and putting things together and wish I had time to go to trade with larger orders I've only spent £600 on plants this year so would not make the £1000 mark are we as small trade a pain in the backside to garden centers.

Where did you start buying?

Go to a proper Nursery, they are half the price of Garden Centres, so your plant budget will go twice as far, and proper Nurseries are so much nicer to deal with.
  • Trade nurseries are the places to go. Garden centres are marking up from trade prices by 250-300%, so get your plants trade and mark them up yourself!
  • My only problem I am so restricted with time with pre school/school pick ups it has been impossible with current situation.
This may not change for a while, don't suppose there are nurseries out there with caged locked safe playspace !

  • Okay, lets see what we can do here.

Firstly, what is your plant budget for the job?
Have you a wish list of plants?
Where are the plants to be delivered to?
When do you need the plants for?

If you can answer these for me, we are happy in front of 1500 or so LJN witnesses to select and deliver your plants at genuine Trade prices. If you go ahead and order, if any plant is not up to your standards, we will replace it free of charge, at our expense to deliver you another.

Can't be fairer than that, in front of witnesses too!!!
  • Thank so much! my budget has been spent it was £150-200 I spent £170 thanks for offer spent my sunday morning shopping while hubby pulling his hair out!
    I'm planting up on Friday.
Will have to seriously consider changing how I do things.
    Thanks again

  • Wow, well done, that sounds like a great deal and should help Miranda out no end.

I dont do much planting, but the Nursery I go to gives me 20% on anything he's bought in, or 30% on anything he's grown himself.
  • So genuine trade circa £85, perhaps next time?

    Good luck with your project.

  • Hi Miranda
I have had a similar problem at a large nursery/garden centre near me.
[Sometimes you need a particular variety or accessory that is not available at my wholesaler.]
This garden centre sent me an application for a 10% (way-hay!) discount card. To be granted this discount I had to sign that I would spend minimum £800pa!
No way would I spend that much this year on the odd bit of this or that (although have spent around 2-3k at wholesaler)
Simple answer was that I would use different garden centres thanks!
Shame for me as they have a massive range and stock holding.
Shame for them as I will now only ever go there if I am really stuck, even when I spend loads more on odd bits!

If I was a retailer I would offer discount to those in a relevant trade as the hope is that they will grow their business and long term will buy more and more....
  • The clue is really in the name Andy, Retail Garden Centre.

As Garden Centres buy from Wholesale/Trade Nurseries just like most Landcapers, they are hardly likely to sell plants to Landscapers for the price that they paid for them.

A 10% Trade discount, whats all that about, when you can visit your local Trade Nursery and pay 50% less than you would at a Garden Centre for plants. In fact you to, if you are Trade, can buy plants for the same price that Garden Centres pay, by visiting your Wholesale Nursery.

Would a Landscaper or maintanence company sell their product and labour at cost, around £6.00 per hour? No, so why expect a Garden Centre to do so?

I try and always deal with a little local nursery to me for little orders have never asked for discount as there prices are so good as it is. For bigger orders I haven't found anywhere local which will do real good quality at reasonable prices. My current preffered provider is in kent but the delifery costs often make this prohibitive. T&S do I remember seeing a discussion about exactly what you are planning on doing, as after your earlier statement I am sure the service you offer is top notch.
Also if anyone knows of any top class suppliers in Somerset please let me know.
