I have been trying to get insurance quotes for price comparison purposes.
Currrently all of my insurances are under one umbrella with the NFU Mutual.
Most companies will quote for Public liability, tools in van, hired in equipment, business interuption, van etc.
BUT mention the trailer and all I get is " sorry Mr Hill we don't insure trailers".
Simply Business and Commercial Vehicle Direct being notable no goes.
Simple question - who do you insure your trailer with?

Permalink Reply by Matt Brown on December 30, 2010 at 18:33 you could try caravan insurers they may be geared up for such things.
ages ago i used to have a caravan and my car insurance said that when it is connected to my car it is covered as part of the vehicle as they are classed as an "outfit"
i have a small box trailer but i very rarely use it and it didnt cost me anything so i'm not even concidering insuring it.
If someone wants to nick it they will whatever you do to secure it.
I seem to remember a few folk on here commenting on the use of a live electrical connection. Good luck to them...mines parked outside and I'd be a bit worried about an innocent party inadvertently leaning against it.
Mines chained to a very large tree, bulldog wheel clamped and has a hitch lock.

Is there anyway of securing a trailer Rowly. Eg a metal post concreted in and a secure lock/padlock or wheel clamp etc.? I have never had a trailer, but it is obvious from what you have said that they are easily stolen.
I have read somewhere that MOST insurers (most) will cover damage to others property/vehicles caused by your trailer when it is hitched to your vehicle i.e it's covered under the towing vehicles policy. You will need to check that out with your insurer.
From what I gather though any damage to your property etc is not covered if you hit it/run over it with your trailer.
Obvious point - if it's not insured and pinched you won't get a bean.
Depends on what your trailer is worth and if you consider it worth insuring.

i store mine in a locked barn and have never though of insurance however is it a legal requirement when towing one?
Thanks Matt,
I'm trying to keep all of the necessaries under one roof, if you get my drift.
It looks as though I'll be sticking with the NFU.
At £4K+ I'm not taking a risk;-)

If the NFU and a hand full of others can do it...why can't the rest?
"Tailor your policy to your requirements" - I don't think so.
