I have been trying to get insurance quotes for price comparison purposes.

Currrently all of my insurances are under one umbrella with the NFU Mutual.

Most companies will quote for Public liability, tools in van, hired in equipment, business interuption, van etc.

BUT mention the trailer and all I get is " sorry Mr Hill we don't insure trailers".

Simply Business and Commercial Vehicle Direct being notable no goes.

Simple question - who do you insure your trailer with?

ahh thanks for that i take it thats the large sticker? my worry was it wouldn't look right but that looks good.

I want trailer insurance too!! Mine is bolted, locked down, hitched and more but they still have a go at nicking it! had a scuffle in November when I caught two of them at 2am (I was still up designing) trying to lever the lock off!

Is the NFU the only one then??

What are the terms of that? Is it still covered when parked up? Or does it need to be hitched up to be covered?

Just rang NFU this morning to cover my new van and they said my trailer (when i get one) is insured to £1000. Any higher value than £1000 worth of trailer and my premium will rise

I asked the NFU the same question.

I 'park' my trailer in a sea container when it is not in use and the man from the NFU said that my trailer is covered wherever it is (with or without my pick up).

NFU    states   ' due care'  !!    -  this may be objective so do as much as you can to hide/lock up.

they dont like paying out - believe me..

Quoting from my NFU LGV insurance document -

" If any trailer ( but not any livestock, horse, catering trailer, caravan, or item of plant) is lost, stolen or damaged and there is no other insurance covering the same loss or damage we will pay up to £1000 or its market value whichever is less".

So depends on the value (£'s) of your trailer. £1000+ you might want to consider extra insurance.

Robin mentioned "due care" in relation to security measures taken to prevent theft. I've taken photo's of mine clamped up , chained and hitchlocked.

I'm not sure if there is anything else I can do to prove the measures I have taken..any ideas other than dragging the NFU rep out to look?

You won't be able to prove that the trailer was fully secured prior to it being stolen unless you take a dated photo every day.

What about these posts that can be concreted in, and lowered and then raised up and locked in place. I have never used them, but I would have thought worth considering and combining with other measures.

Hi Rowland,

Thanks for getting a quote from us here at Simply Business - and it was good to go through some of the finer details of your quote.

As we discussed we can provide cover for a trailer that's being used in connection with your business. As you mentioned a landscape gardener using a trailer is quite standard and we are more than happy to offer cover.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact me via

Kind Regards
