The best mulched and bagger lawn mower

Hi Everyone,

after picking up some larger contracts, I'm looking to reduce my cutting time and get a new mower. i currently run a Viking 655G. The sites have large areas of grass and smaller areas. A ride on isn't viable as part of the site is on a slope.

Im considering getting a mulcher to reduce time. Would a mulching mower work when the grass is only being cut every fortnight?

I'm currently looking at a Toro 22293 which is a commercial mower. Ive also been looking at Toros larger time master and turf master.

Can anyone recommend a decent mower? price range is around £1000.

Regards
Dan

  • Turfmaster!!

Had it collecting thick long wet grass today and it was fantastic. Most of the grass was 3"-4" and longer in places. Filled the bag almost completely. It mulches fantastically, Thursday it was mulching 3"-4" of wet grass and leaves to 63mm easily, with very little showing on top.

    Hi James,

if have been considering it! how is it at mulching longer grass? does it have a side discharge and does that work well? I've struggled to find someone who has used it! is it manouverable compared with smaller mowers?

  • you left the chat so I will post up!

Mulching longer grass, fairly good, occasionally leaves a little waste on the surface but this is quick to disappear.

side discharge is good but not great on wet thick when you try to cut to much at once!

I find it fairly manoeuvrable but not as much as my hayter rear roller. It does scalp a bit but once you get used to it you can see where it will scalp and counter act this.

Gary has a Toro to but can't recall the exact model, I know his main focus was a good collection and that was definitely what he got!

They do a 63cm one which is probably much more useable as you will have less access issues and scalping won't be a huge problem!

    Thanks for the info!

have you used it on smaller areas of grass? would you think it would be too difficult?

im stuck in-between the turf master and the toro 22293 which is a 21inch but commercial machine!

  • 22293 won't mulch so perhaps the 22291 is a better choice!

other wise I would be tempted by the 22203TE being 66cm, side discharge and mulching, collection will be good to!!

The long range tank on the kawasaki on the turf master will do around 6/7 hours of cutting before being empty. So I would say a long range tank is important!

I use the turf master on some small patches on big sites because its easier than swapping mowers. I don't have any issues with manouverability but I'm used to it now.

I am sure some others on here have the turf master!

  • This is our second season with a 30" Toro as part of our mower fleet. Copes well with fortnightly cuts. Good collecting, reasonable mulching. Side discharge will clog if grass is longish and wet. Everyone likes using it - goes as quickly or slowly as you want with variable drive. Will not leave the finish of a roller mower, but still pretty good. Definately a time-saver and a good addition to the fleet.

Thanks for your feed back James and Colin,

have either of you used the Turfmaster on slopes or banks?

Think the Turfmaster is going to be my best option!

We have a zero turn 36" Toro which is a rotary flail mulcher.

It is a beast and leaves an excellent finish - a machine which is a real pleasure to use and earns us money.
  • If you have a 6 series Viking, have you thought about getting the mulching kit for your current machine? I think they are only about £50.

Dan, It would be a toss up between a viking 755 & purchase the mulch insert and blade, or
A toro, I have the viking set up and used a lot this year and was mulching fortnightly with good results, and picks up fine in the wet with the normal cutting blade, but the toro sounds good to, especially with having the extra 9 inch of cutting width.
