Hi all,

I have a customer who I have done some work for in the past and they were very fussy and made the job not very enjoyable, including holding money back because they thought I had not done work I had not quoted for. They now want me to do more work in the coming months and I am not keen to do so.

The question is, does any one have any tips or methods for saying no? I thought I would say that I am too busy but I fear they may say that they will wait.

  • I had one like that; just keep saying that you're too busy! Don't deviate, don't make allowances, just keeping saying you're too busy.

  • Hi Ben, honesty is the best policy:)
    If you are only doing work now and then just say you are only taking on regular clients now eg weekly, fortnightly etc or preferably 52 weeks of the year.
    Nothing worse than working for clients/gardens you don't like.

    I had one recently. Similar reason, stretching the demands and not paying the agreed price for the agreed service. In the end I just said I was unable to maintain their garden any longer due to other commitments and left it at that.

    I put my rates up annually so put there's up by say 20% if that doesnt work then say you have taken on more work and you don't have availability on the day you are working in there area
    I have had a customer since literally day one from 9 nine years ago and just put there rate up 20 %
    Although I feel they might pay it, not the best result as the job has become less enjoyable lately
    Remember one point, you run your own business to be your own boss if you don't enjoy a job, then quit it
  • Totally agree with everyone elses sentiments, dont feel pressured to work for a nasty client mate, but if you tell them straight they will bad mouth you in the area, so its best just to say your fully booked with no window in the foreseeable future. ive been in the game for 10 years,and Ive got a black list of nasty/over particular/bad payers (delete where applicable).always remember who they are! its a learning curve!

  • Just say you are not taking any more work as you are full up. Period.
  • Do you have to even take their calls, just ignore them, they will go away.

  • i tend to ignore a few now, ok some were in london where i only work a day a fortnight in summer,
    but in the past ive needed the work, although they tend to be tight/demanding there last 2 years so im not bothered due to being busy around shropshire and the people are appreciative and helpful - the money is relative also and nearly as good here now!

    if you have not taken the job on or quoted feel under NO obligation to do it..

    id rather wash a pile of clothes or cook a decent meal etc than waste MY time with sorting impatient or demanding/rude peoples long-awaited gardens out) whats the rush when its not been touched for 3 yrs or 6 months !! they will wait if they want you.

    i have lots of jobs on my own house (im waiting for my painter now 3+ months as hes good)
    i dont know the price yet but its irrelevant!

    look after your own back yard first as they say :)

    good luck & if they were moaning then, why do they want you back?? as they know your good and they 'get what they wanted or more at a good price!' ...

  • The alternative is to substantially increase the price. If they accept your increased price then it may turn out to be a good job after all, if they don't accept then you have only lost a customer that you didn't want.
