Suggestions please?

Hi all, I'm struggling with the purchase of a new mower so I need suggestions please as I need a new mower soon because my old Hayter 48 is now coughing up blood and beginning his good bye speech!I have exacting requirements: I need affordability, rear roller, easy start, reliability, economy, good size catcher bag, single lever height adjustment, fairly light (40 to 50 ish kilos is fine), tough, works well in all weathers, rear discharge, easily folding handle to a much reduced size, powerful engine (5hp or approx 170cc), variable engine speed.I would like variable drive speed, mulching facility, cutting height between 10mm and 70mm, quiet, easy maintenance, low running cost. Not asking for much then?I have looked at Hayter 48, Hayter 48 pro, lawn flite 448kjr, Honda, John Deere, Viking, and have been introduced to others. The main other is Masport Rotarola. My question is twofold 1. Does anyone use Masport Rotarolla if so what are they like? And 2. Does anyone know of a mower that ticks all my boxes! Each one I look at has great positives but in many cases the negatives out way the positives. So far I haven't found the perfect example but I can compromise on some requirements but not others.I know there have been many posts about preferred mowers but I'm keen to see what you think of my choices and if you think of others that I've missed. Thanks for your help.

  • I thought I would respond to this (even though I'm not a pro) because the mower I use for my own garden seems to meet all of your criteria above, except single lever height adjustment. I have a Honda HRX537. You can pick them up for less than £1000, so shouldn't break the bank either.

  • Hayter 48 pro £799 plus free stuff at the moment at FR Jones, does everything I think you will need. I have got a few and am very pleased with them.

Thanks Harry, May well take you up on that offer!
  • Andy - great 'ask' above...exacting specifications indeed ;->

What doesn't a Honda model do that you ask for? I think it meets the mark, either a domestic 476 or a 536HRH pro model?

A big fan of Honda here (so far), served extremely well in beginning, establishing and growing the business.

    Cheers, Eugene.

  • The Viking semi-pro would tick every box, plus has a BBC for good measure. The 21" comes in under a grand, and is light and very fast. Way faster than the Honda Pros, and way better in the wet.

On the downside, I got mine at Easter. Since then I've had a drive shaft fail, two new gearboxes and a drive cable. All under warranty, and a loan machine whilst it's in for repair, but it does raise concerns about the build. I've only had two cables fail in about 15 years of Honda Pro ownership!

The time backwards and forwards to the dealer wipes out the speed of the machine...

The trouble with the Hondas is you know you're buying a very heavy machine, not great in smaller gardens, and that the roller is a very expensive consumable. I think you'd struggle with one after an 18" Hayter, but try the Kubota-made Honda Pro if your dealer has one in: it's slightly better than the Honda, and a few hundred cheaper.

Must admit the 476 is interesting unfortunately the 536 is too much of a monster. A good consideration, a little towards the high end of the budget but not unachievable.

    Thank you.

Vikings, being part of the Stihl family, are somewhat pricey for what I am looking for. Reliability is a key factor and I have heard of problems with Viking build (May just be the odd glip) which is a surprise as my Stihl equipment is great!

I've never lifted a Honda but a Lawnflite which I'm told are similar in style and weight are very heavy.

Thanks for your input (good luck with your mower)

    Thanks again.

As the old Hayter is now drinking oil like Ollie Read drank Vodka and taking at least a dozen pulls to get started I think I need to get a move on. Any ideas or input folks? Thanks to those who have already posted.

Mountfield sp555r? Its a 21 inch roller with 4 speed, not too heavy, not too expensive. Does not much but then no roller mowers are designed with that in mind.

My thoughts are moving towards buying two of these.

They aren't pro machines, and so the warranty will be 90 days. The bag is pretty rubbish, but it works.

I had one on loan whilst the Viking was repaired, probably three weeks with a machine that's been shagged-out by contrators. It was not as good in the wet as the Viking, but better than the Honda, or it's clones. Far more useable in smaller spaces than the Hondas, as well. I really like it, the only let-down is the lack of a BBC.

It will break down, but if you have two that's less of an issue. Parts seem cheaper, and even old machines hold a value as they are rare.

£1600 for two 555s, compared with, say, £1200 for one Honda-type? You need a back-up mower, so two 555s work out about the same as one Honda/Kubota/Lawnflite/Kaaz, and an ebay-special Etesia? Tough call.
