Quieter and cleaner,
Just wondered what other people thought about the new Stihl engines ?

Permalink Reply by Geoff Norfolk on June 25, 2011 at 12:13 I've had an FS130 4-mix strimmer for a couple of years and been very pleased with it. Engine has been the usual Stihl reliability. Needs a signicantly stronger pull on the cord to turn the engine for starting. Engine sounds completely different with a low deeper note to it. Fuel consumption is supposedly better than the old engines but haven't really noticed.
Bit of extra engine maintenance required with setting the valve clearances after, I seem to remember, 100 hours use.............. really simple job that takes about 10 minutes.
Not sure what happened to my reply but I have it as a copy.
I believe the 410 has the newer type engine fitted and the easy start/pull system on it.The 410 is a larger engine (just) and holds a little more fuel. I just recently purchased a new clearing saw as I was after the FS460 but was offered the FS480 for £499 plus VAT.
Dealer was not sure about the new engine management system so I went for the technology that was proven.
Can I ask what they are asking for both machines.
Permalink Reply by Gareth Davies on June 25, 2011 at 21:52 I run both the fs 450 and the newer fs460 and prefer the 450. The 460 has more power and easier to start but is heavier therefore the balance isn't as good as the 450.
Fuel usage is about the same in both, not much differance in either machine.
The newer 410 and 460 machines are not 4 mix but what stihl call a 2mix. Similar sound to the 450. If it was my choice would go for the fs400, a lighter and better balanced machine which is nicer to use.
Permalink Reply by John on June 25, 2011 at 22:00 I like the Stihl 130 combi with the new engine, but I have not had it for that long so it will be interesting to see
what happens in the future.
I must try the Stihl HP super oil - is it really expensive ?
Permalink Reply by Gareth Davies on June 25, 2011 at 22:28 The extra weight has gone on the engine therefore has lost some of the balance. Also the engine is bulkier.
The 460 is very easy to start up with the new choke system and there's only a stop button now, no on/off switch and a much lighter pull on the cord to start it.
The 460 has great power feels much more than the 450 even though it's only 1cc more. The only drawback is the balance compared to the 450. Havent noticed much difference with the engine management, maybe that's why it seems more powerfull? Both 450 and 460 been reliable so far
Got the 460 as I needed a second strimmer due to getting extra help when busy therefore have 2 machines going. 460 was cheaper than the 450 and was also interested in the better fuel consumption. Lucky I get to use the 450

Thats interesing Gareth as the 450 is just over a pound lighter than the newer machines. I guess the weight or balance is due to engine alone or have they altered something else.
Like you I do like the balance on the 480 which is the same weight as the 450. The harness makes life so easy as well once setup right.
What do you think of the 460 and was there a reason for going with the 460?
Do you find any improvement with that engine management system fitted?

Permalink Reply by Fraser Watson on July 3, 2011 at 15:20 Was the 615/650 including vat? Best price I was offered was 644 inc vat for the 410
Hi Mark,
What sort of problems, so I know what to expect. I also have the 460.
Ben.
