    I've heard (from LJN) that they're pretty good but not as good as a proper iron (although a damn site quicker).

    But they're flexi shaft aren't they? I don't particularly trust a flexishaft to not be crap with the professional stihl kombi engines (i.e. 90 and above)

  • I also have the same dilemma, bought a victa edger (three wheeled type) a couple of years ago and was not impressed so bit sceptical about buying a strimmer type edger! Would like to try one out though.

  • Call me old fashioned I like edging with a pair of shears.

    The golf club I used to work at had over 80 bunkers (36 holes), we used a tool called a Reciprocator for doing the edges...

    The benefits from it compared to a lawn edger are;

    No flying debris - clippings stay where they’re cut
    No flying stones - reduces potential insurance claims

    There is a thread about it on our american cousins website lawnsite.com link

    I know the Americans always use them. I have found a older stihl one for £155 so isn't a huge amount, if it doesn't work that we'll or get used you can always re sell it. How much are the reciprocators?
  • To be fair if I was edging 38 bunkers I'd want that bit of kit.

  • We bought a Stihl edger for our Combi a couple of weeks ago. Only tried it once - needs some practice, so the jury's out on this one as far as I am concerned.

    Does it just create a line which you need to then use a shovel to remove the grass and soil you have cut off, or can you just go over and over that and it destroys the grass and soil back into the flower bed?
  • Lets just say my first attempt wasn't exactly a resounding success. Worked a treat on the straight bit, but as I hit a curve, the blade developed a life of it's own and wanted to have a look at the middle of the lawn, so it was back to the edging shears and more practicing!

    How does the reciprocator deal with just grass?
