stihl hedgetrimmers

Hi everyone need some advice on the stihl t versus r trimmers . Can the heavier duty ones trim normal growth and make the hedge look tightly cut I have a pair of hs86 t.  thanks

If you only have one machine, the R would be my choice. Yes it leaves a perfectly acceptable cut and can do nice fine hedge trimming. Too much is made of T vs R in my opinion.

ok dan thanks my old hs85 have packed up but the gap between the teeth was larger but the blades moved much faster than the hs86r

We use both, the 81T gets used the most, always use it for Leylandii, Privet, topiary, etc. We only use the 81R if we are doing hedge reductions or rougher hedges like hawthorn, berberis, etc. The 81T is noticably lighter so is less tiring when your using it all day, it also allows you to cut the hedge quicker as it has a higher blade RPM. Ideally you should have one of each. You get your stihl stuff from cathcarts Drew?

yes chris they have quoted me £470 all in for the hs86r i like tne single side with c\atcher plate

sounds about right, i got 2 new ones in spring cost about £450 each i think.

I purchased the Stihl HS 81R CE hedgecutter from FRJones this year and im very happy with it. I have trimmed yew and leylandii and done reductions and cutting of broadleaf species with no problem at all. 

I do give it a quick sharpen the night before with a round file just to hone the blade teeth a little to ensure a good cut when trimming - takes 5 mins tops.
