Putting employment T's& C's aside. I'd want them out the door yesterday.

I expect any driver of our vans to drive with due respect to the speed limits and other drivers etc. however our vans and various drivers have been caught a few times!! Mostly by the local community patrols for which we receive a nice letter giving the details.  We do however tend to find out fairly quickly when and where these people are about locally including the mobile units.  Only once was one caught by a mobile patrol and that was on a Sunday morning so clearly personal use.  Driver paid the fine and took the course to save getting the points.

Whilst we take speeding to be a serious offence, we do have to work to tight schedules and on the odd occassion get a little carried away but I like to think nothing major over the limit from what I have seen and certainly always respect the 20 MPH limits. When you see the miles that we cover it wouldn't be unrealistic to assume that we wouldn't push 35 in a 30 at odd times.

Certainly not a sackable offence in my books but if the speed recorded was way over or deemed to be driving in an unresponsible manner etc. then yes the riot act would be read.

My fleet insurance isn't too worried with the odd points for any driver but anymore then it may be effected and if this happened, they can pay the increase!

Only twice have I received a phone call from members of the public about the driving but again nothing too serious and was addressed accordingly.

J.P. I'm my own worst nightmare, got 2 speeding tickets last year, but in all honesty I was in a hurry...oops :))

Whoever speeds, pays the penalty, simple as that !!!

Totally agree. Other half got caught twice by the same camera 5 years ago - daft (30 mph). Speed should be moderated to type of road and of course weather - simple as that.

I would expect them to pay it and tell them to be more careful, however I would be concerned.

Ive never been done speeding as I stick to 30 and 40 limits and read the road, IMO the lower speed limits are there for a reason and getting caught speeding shows an inability to read the road and or concentrate as cameras are easy to spot.

On the motorway and dual caridgeway  my views and driving are very different and motorway and dual carriageway I drive at  relatively high speeds as the norm. These  are a different kind of road, to clarify i support autoban dee restriction of motorway  so may not always  follow the current  70 limit with ridgidity but I do support and adhere to lower limits  on A and B roads and would expect staff to do likwise.

Ps in answer to the question.  Assuming it was say 35 in a 30 - they would probably get an informal warning and they would have to pay any fine. Round here I would expect them to pay for the course you can go on to avoid getting points (cost approx £100 plus half a day) to avoid additional insurance costs.

If they did it again that would be another matter!

If it was not well above the limit i would let him pay his fine and that would be that.

Here in lancashire speeding is a multi million £££ business 2 speeding courses a day 30 people on each course thats 30k a week plus all the fines for them who dont get the course option.

If plod put as much effort into  getting stolen plant back, getting the @@@@@@@@ who do OAP's in. stamping out drugs  then I would respect them more

Damn right.

i must admit i have always said if the police did more about catching proper criminals rather than motorist then they would get more respect, but when i nearly got broken into last year the police were very good and visited me 3 or 4 times and done door to door around the neighbours to ask if they saw anything, but they do have to make their selfs present in the rural areas, not so much in town areas thats where the motorist gets hit

It would have to be dealt with on its own merits but all drivers, whether in company vehicle or their own is liable to pay the fine, thats the law. Action taken would depend on speed in the particular zone. Dont think its a first time sackable disciplinery action for them, however 50 in a 30 zone they would certainly get a written warning and sacked if it happened again.

Until a couple of years ago, I would have agreed with you Paul.  However our County authority extended the 30 limit 600yards out of town  to include a ramrod straight country road.  What fun the local the plods have now, parking in a farm gateway, behind a hedge and pointing the laser gun at you through the foliage.  So after 38years of 'reading the road, concentrating and easily spotting cameras' I had received my first 'speeding' ticket.

We have a clause to cover Speeding, Driving under influenece etc in Emplyment T&C classing it as Gross Misconduct which may result in dismissal at my discretion.

Anyone had a letter from their broker recently redefining terms and insurance cover if an employee is in an accident as a result of Driving under influence or leaving keys, unprotected within a certain distance of a vehicle ?

We had at renewal time ...:- I'll post a copy of letter if I can find.

Insurers are looking for ANY excuse to refuse a claim.

I absolutely support de-restriction of non-urban motorways in good weather conditions...Had many an enjoyable trip thru Germany :-)

Its the inappropiate use of speed (location, conditions and/or weather) that causes problems....

Amen to that

what annoys me the most is, not so much in the van but definately in the car, 30mph in third is annoyingly just to high up the revs to allow smooth and quiet progression, where as put it in 4th and the engine then tends to labour at too low revs, 35-40mph in 4th and you hit the sweet spot, its hardly surprising people speed when the gearing doesnt suit the most common speed limits!
