Out of the blue my hydrangea turned into a very sick plant over the course of 2 days. Has anyone got any idea what this could be? It was doing great beforehand, really vigorous growth.

The leaves now are just pulling out at the slightest touch.

I can't think of anything that has happened, no petrol has been spilled etc. Any thoughts would be welcome, I'd like to see it flower and keep going for many years as this will be the first spring since I bought it in the autumn!

Have you had any recent late frosts Dan?

Only a very mild one, +1deg... could that be it?

Not sure, but looks like frost damage - can scorch the new growth on the more exposed parts of the plant. If it gets early morning sun after night frost, more prone to damage too.

Frost damage Dan, your only 20 miles or so from me and mine are the same, Sharp frost a week or so ago.
It will recover.
It looks like it has been 'burnt' by frost to me.
I forgot to add that the flowerheads should be left on over winter and only pruned in spring as they will help give the plant a bit of extra protection from the frost.

I don't think I would worry about your plant though as it is at the moment, it will most likely make a full recovery.

Nick.
