shredders

Waste is starting to become a bit of a problem for me now. Time out for runs etcSo Ive been looking at smallish garden shredders ( petrol ) for hedge cuttings etcyesterday i managed to accumulate about 3 van loads. Does anyone else use these? whats your experience with them etcIts not worth getting a large chipper as Ive nowhere to store it and I don't think Id get enough use from it for larger stuff.

  • If you are going to invest in something like this you should really base your descision on a sound marketing strategy. That really is the best way to go about it. Many clients of mine who have gone down this route have ended up with either Jo-Beau or the Greenmech little chippers (I think it may be called the cs100). I'm fairly reliably informed that these are by far the best choices. I'd stay away from cheaper machines if I were you.

Greenmech CS100 (which is about 5k incl vat IIRC)

Or Jo Beau who made several sizes of small chipper from a 2 inch m100 that weights about 30kg up to a 5 inch self propelled one.

As Gary says best to hire first before you buy anything.

  • Ive had a look at a few on youtube and now I can see that the lower end of the market ones are too slow and i may as well use a pair of loppers to cut it up. Ive just looked at the cs100 and a bit out of my price range. Maybe next year I'll try one out by hiring and then maybe look at a purchase.
    Thanks for the advice

If you want a recommendation for one that will fit easily into most vans, has no 'sticky-out' bits and has some form of 'feed' then I'd recommend an Eliet Pro or similar. Main benefits are build quality, tri-blades and well angled chute. Often available as a hire machine, thus you can try before you buy. New, prices start at around £2k upwards

Search the Forum and you'll see some useful views...I'm biased as we use them :-)

  • I was just looking at that one New at £999 or one very similar I have used an eliet edger and found the blades hard to get hold of as the supplier we used ordered from America. Have you had problems with parts?
  • Sorry it was a diffrent one that was 999. That one was 1995 which is a bit more in my price range

Strange, Eliet are a Belgium company and (I think) are distributed by PDS in the UK. Never had problems with spares - suggest your dealers were spinning a yarn ?, but note that the blades can take several regrinds.

Pro-Spec machines will always cost more than domestic versions, so depends on your likely usage and as normal you get what you pay for in terms of durability and warranty etc.

Often come up as second hand from Hire companies at reasonable price. Strong engine means at worst new blades, a drive belt & can of orange touch up paint

  • I've just had a look and yes they are so all they were doing was getting a few extra £ for postage. I'd never even heard of eliet before the edger. I might try to hire one and see what its like. Thankyou for that

We (Acacia) have a 3" Eliet Shredder for hire - acaciarental.com/eliet-shredder - it's a brilliant little machine for leaves and bits and they're really compact and light.

Not sure where you are but if you're S.E England and want to have a go before buying give us a call! :)

  • I got the new 4s Eliet major back in may. Its a fantastic machine, shredding stuff down so you end up with about 20% volume of the original amount. The blades can be turned round, it will cope with small stones & such, I'm very happy with it, as it allows me store the mulch/chippings, cutting down my trips to the tip.
It says it will do up to 2", not tried anything that big through it, but it eats leylandi branches/leaves/brambles, I just stuff armfuls at a time into it & it takes it all in its stride.
I got it for smaller stuff such as the above & hedge cuttings/tree prunings & it does what it says on the tin, & if I have anything near 2" I save it for folks who have wood burners, also I have a tree busta for bigger stuff.
I dealt with John at PDS, who was very helpful, I had an on site demo which sold it to me.
