Sharpening hedge trimmers best method

My local mower shops gone on holiday for two weeks everywhere else is a 3 week wait my 30 inch blades are blunt.I've seen a video on YouTube where he lines blades togeather then sharpens them with a grinder is that a bad way? Or should I purchase a dremel?

A die grinder is what I find best (a dremel is a die grinder) Aldi sometimes have them for £12 ish which is perfect for me because its not like I use it for hours on end.

A grinding wheel on a drill is pretty much the same thing as well.

  • Agree with Seth. The Dremel type tool is worth it however for its manoeuvrability above a standard drill. If you go down the road of a Dremel type tool an additional flexy shaft can make the job even easier.
  • I'll order a cheap one off web

While I'm waiting can use angle grinder with a disc or is it better to buy a file and do it manual this time?
  • manually...chain saw falt file works well

  • I've bought a diamond file from machinemart it shows sharpening loppers on the picture wish me luck
  • Flat chainsaw file is really good. About 3 passes and you have nice sharp blades.

I use a large bastard file
They take less effort and do the job really well
Lightweight quick and ideal to take off burrs when u have hit a stray wire
  • I bought a twin pack of bahco files from Screwfix and use them or when I'm in the field a flat chainsaw file!! I can do the whole trimmer in 15 mins at the yard all by hand
  • I am sure you do a great job but I also guess that you are young with energy to spare. Give it another 20 years and a power tool may grab you as the best thing since sliced bread. And by the way "what was the best thing before sliced bread ?" :0)
  • Very true well I used my diamond file it was alot of effort think I need a more aggressive file and bigger one I'm ordering multi tool tonight defineatly fast in future
