Early Freelanders can be a dog! not sure on the Reg range but if it was made when Ford had it I would run away.
i would give up the free lander as the older ones as said above are a poor excuse for a landy and will give more problems than there worth and not brill at pulling, newer ones are better but also more money too .
if you want something family with work use aswell i would look towards a disco1 / 2 manual not auto about £600 - £1500 depending on if its got toys fitted and condition and best time to buy is summer not winter (like a convertable you dont sell in winter, you dont sell your 4X4 in muddy fun season unless you want more money for it)
if d1 you have to check under for rust on the rear chassie and if rust free go for it, also get a 200tdi engine as this runs forever with out head problems and if you manage to pop the head gasket towing somthing big then it will run and run on a blown gasket just with noise unlike the 300tdi
the boot space i can fit a wheel barrow & cement mixer with stand in no problem with seats down i have a 300tdi disco 1 and use this for every thing from a family 7 seater to stable vehical and then at weekends as a play toy on off road play days (fitted a few toys to mine though like lift kit / muds winch etc etc)
getting an older vehical is better if you plan to use for work aswell because can you immagine scratching up you nice l200 etc as an older 4x4 will already have the odd scratch etc
So far as I'm aware it doesn't matter which vehicle you use, or how many you have, you can claim 100% of business mileage and 0% of private mileage.
I keep it simple and just do business miles in the van and private in the car, but so long as you're keeping mileage records then there's no problem with part-private use. I used to use one car for private use, and the business mileage of two companies: we just used to divide the costs into a per-mile amount over the year, and split it according to the miles used on each business.
You will need to tell the insurers, of course.
The freelander is a good choice as a family car that can be pressed into towing, but make sure you realise that things will go wrong and it'll require repairs to annoying things like windows, doors, lights and buttons. 2005 on is best, before that there were a lot of engine problems. Vans and other work pickups are not a good choice for the family.
Also, why not consider a good diesel estate? They will easily pull a decent trailer (what weight of trailer are you talking? Freelander might not be able to pull a proper trailer).

I dont want to pour cold water on your idea of second business vehicle, but i would speak to your accountant before you buy anything. see what he says with regards to initial cost, insurance, upkeep of the vehicle as well as ongoing repairs and MOTs. He might say all you can claim is your fuel costs if its only used once every 3 months for your business, because realistically its your family car. my accountant is a bit of a stickler about this, maybe yours is too? I suppose if your turning over a good amount it will be ok, but if your not its a grey area.
If that's all you're towing then get a nice medium car. It won't look any worse than a banger 4x4! A diesel mondeo/passat estate will be great, good for the family, economical and pull the trailer as if it's not even there. It's the only sensible choice.
I pulled a 750kg trailer with a 1.5 petrol almera and that didn't even notice it was there let alone a more powerful car.
