I always thought the sponsorship of roundabouts was for large companies in the area to show some corporate social responsibility funding in their local areas. Could be way off the mark on that one?

  • you just have you name on the sign.. you don't get to maintain or put anything up on the roundabout itself

  • Spot on Robbie.
From a marketing point of view, these signs are only good for CSR, not really for promotion of your products & services. People need to engage with advertising for it to be effective and as busy as roundabouts can be, most people will (or should) be focussed on the traffic and not a small ad' board on the side of the roundabout...plus it's mega expensive.

As a test, can anyone recall an advert that they saw on a roundabout recently?
They're all over the place but you may not have noticed them yourself before now.

Marketing Force sell roundabout sponsorship: http://www.marketingforce.co.uk/sponsor-information.html

I'd be a little careful. It's OK for a bathroom specialist or IT company to sponsor a roundabout, town flower borders or other attraction, because they won't be associated with the care and upkeep of the asset.

But, if you are a grounds maintenance or landscaping company and your name is associated with a poorly kept feature then it could, subliminally, put potential clients off as they may assume that you are actually responsible for the build or maintenance.

We did enquire to sponsor a roundabout by us @ A31/A325 junction in Surrey.

As Phil states above, we could play no part in its upkeep and given they get the same LA service/frequency of visit(s), we tactfully declined to save any embarrassment.

What is strange in the recent past it was sponsored by a local large garden centre on the A325, who DID maintain it. I wonder if the rules changed ? (however, they have now ceased sponsorship of it).

  • I've left a message with my local council regarding this but have had no reply will ring again today but if they state I have to pay for there council to maintain it they will get an ear full as the local council is disgusting for maintenance and pride they get 3 hours of breaks a day round here.

I want to maintain it myself I don't know the sizes of the roundabouts you have enquired about but the ones im looking at are only small ones about 20ft by 20ft.

We've looked into this before, the structure does vary a little between councils but the pricing is normally based on the amount of traffic that goes past. Make sure you pick one in your area to reach local people, and remember if it is an area with high numbers of commuters then you may not be targeting relevant people!

The cost of the sign includes the sign itself usually, one by each exit on the roundabout, and the cost pays for the maintenance of the roundabout - that's usually the whole point! The signs are also maintained in the cost, I think including any replacements needed. It is a lot of money for busy roundabouts, but they are likely to bring in higher levels of business. Also, I think they are usually long term, minimum 6 months - a year, so quite an investment!

Quite a few councils do it through a centralised website, for example in the South of England some use http://www.sponsoraroundabout.com/
