We took on a new large maintenance contract a couple of months

back, which also includes improving the garden in quite a few areas,

and rebuilding broken stone walls and putting in steps etc.

At the bottom of the garden is a large slope with a long hedge running along

ther top, where the level lawn finishes, the area created, when the old property

was demolished and the new residentil flats built.

The area is not overlooked and is occassionally used as a BBQ spot.

The bank had lots of rocks and concrete blocks sticking out of it and looked

horrible. It was decided to develop it as a wildflower bank after quickly chipping out

these small bits of rubble.

Apart from the small bits of rubble, this is what we found. You can't see from the photo

but a good percentage are perfect for stone walling, with quite a few very large square

rocks obviously used in previous pillar work.  - Probably a total of about 4 tonnes

Lucky find

So what are you going to make, John

a Torbay sculpture?

There is an area at the end of the second photo that drops down

to a lower section that needs steps, so I thought it would be nice to

have a couple of semi circular steps down to this level, making a feature

of them. Steps then lead up to the middle lawn area with the upper bank

overlooking it.

At the moment we are concentrating on clearing all the rubble etc, that was lying

around the garden making it look so unkempt and uncared for. Once this has been done

we can start to think about Torbay sculptures :)

I will take a photo of all the rubble lying around in the garden that we have piled up at the

bottom of the garden next to the lower road, ready for the skips.

We were going to do some work on this lawn but our suggestion was ignored.

Hopefully with our mulching lawnmowers things will improve throughout the year.

Does it annoy you when people say that they want maintenance but their garden is a complete mess?

Yes, I can maintain your mess, it will be a tenner a week, i will gather weed seeds and scatter them randomly about your garden, is that ok?

What they actually mean is they want the garden restored to some beautiful fantasy paradise for the same cost as routine maintenance.

This garden doesn't fall into that category Geoffrey, as the work

was well defined at the initial meeting.

The previous few garden contractors simply worked around the mess,

and collected their money at the end of the month.

I cannot subscribe to that sort of mentality, as the mess of the garden

would seriously get me down each week. A few weeks of extreme effort is

then replaced with pleasure as the garden develops, rather than a weekly

draining of the spirit.

This is the rubbish that was lying around the garden, the strimmer is

there to gauge the scale.
