Raised bed shrub

I am trying to find the ideal shrub for a raised sleeper bed the problem I am having is balancing the look of the shrub the clients want with the amount of space needed for root growth. The raised sleeper bed in placed on a patio surface so the roots must not penetrate this, the height of the bed is 750mm.The shrub needed must be no more than 2m tall, have autumn colour preferably keeping its leafs through winter as it blocks the view of an ugly fence and next doors leylandii hedge. So far I have thought of Euyonimus Alatus just not sure about root growth, any ideas would be much appreciated.

  • How wide / long is the bed? 750mm depth would be plenty for many shrubs, unless the width or length is very small...

Euonymus alatus has good autumn colour, but is deciduous of course. E. a. 'Red Cascade' has even better autumn colour, and is dwarfer. There are a whole bunch of other Euonymus (the ubiquitous Emerald and Gold and all its brethren) which might fit the bill, and are evergreen, but it does depend how much width / depth you have to play with.
  • Do you know Cistus Corbariensis Shadow? might this do - its one of my favourites.
  • How about a phormium tenax?! Some thing a bit different but fits in most situations. Just find one that stays around the size you want!
  • Thanks all some great suggestions. The bed in 1m 80 long and 1m 60 wide. I think I will go with the Euonymus Red Cascade because of its brilliant autumn colour and pretty berry's.
Thank you for all your help.
  • Hi there, thats a tough one! Invariable good autumnal colour means that they are deciduous plants. Photinia x fraseri ' Red Robin' has nice red and green leaves and is a popular shrub(medium too large) that can be trained as a standard, (could be underplanted later on also) prunes well too. the smoke bush Cotinus coggygria nice shrub though looses leaves though.

E.a. 'Red Cascade' is lovely, but very compact, and slow growing - in a bed that size you'll probably need 3, or will have to be VERY patient!
