Push vs Self Propelled

Hi all

 

I already have an Etesia mulcher and a Hayter 53 Pro for my commercial work but im now looking for a new mower for my domestic work. It has to be fairly tough but light enough to be lifted up steps, over borders etc.

 

Ive got my eye on a Honda Izy, I used a push one a couple of years ago when working for a firm but since then ive had all self propelled machines. In doing this ive probably got slower and lazier! 

 

Speed is a factor and ive read on here that the SP version of the izy is very slow which wouldn't suit me so should i just man-up and work a bit harder with a push one? Or can you recommend a suitable machine in the same weight/price range (30-35kg/under £500)??

You could fit a larger pulley on the engine and longer belt to speed it up. This is what i did on my mountfield m6 makes it a fast lightweight mower.

I know another contractor that had Izy's that were too slow - he changed the belts and pullies to increase the speed.

I use a 16" Mountfield/Honda hybrid push for anything thats too small/awkward for my Hayter 48.

Sometimes self propelled can be a pain in small areas in my opinion.

You can always push the SD izy instead if you are feeling like rushing, but you cant let the PD do all the work if you want it to.

 

SD izy isnt fast, but if you are carrying another mower around with intent then you might as well have the option if you get plenty of awkward lawns. A self propelled mower is much more useful than a push.

I've got a Masport 500 Contractor push mower the I've been using for over a year. 

It cuts well in all conditions, is nice and simple with no drive belts and cost under £400.

It only weighs 26kg so is handy for humping up and down steps etc.

I would definately buy one again.

Couple of jobs I have with big steps I either do on a day I have staff, or I use mr brushcutter.

 

John deere's are fast, I wouldn't entertain a push mower. Self prop can be pushed if you want to go faster. Also the self prop is a godsend on corners, turning etc, where you can't get behind the mower to push it out.

I've read a couple of times about putting a bigger pulley and belt on a mower. Is it an easy thing to do?

I checked out the masport and J Deere Mowers, both look pretty impressive, especially the Masport.

I have had drive failures in the first season on both masport and JD mowers though, build quality isn't as good as etesia or honda.

why dont you demo a phe ? its a push mower 46cm no frills mower which will cut as fast as you walk, pluss the waight of the machine is nothing and i know of 5 end users who have put there own handle mod on the mower to lift it with one hand because they work around waterways so need the other free to steady them self's.

Hi Neil, although it pains me to say it i would go for an etesia as well. They've pretty much sewn the market up with the pro46 as far as small lightweight collectors are concerned. Its the only one to go for. Just be careful who you buy it off.

Hello,  I have a little Soverign push mower for my customers with small lawns, it is very reliable, cost about £100 and makes a nice job, its in it's 2nd season now, and it has never let me down. I bought it as an inbetweener as another mower i had bought failed miserably and had to go back to the dealer, and i had jobs to do. It's so light you don't know you're pushing it!

Yes mate, it's the ME53B. It's a brilliant mower. Mine is a 2003 model which I bought second hand. Very good quality mower, when it dies I wouldn't hesitate in buying a brand new one
