I wonder if anyone can help me out on this one.  A few weeks ago a new pub manager contacted me for a quote on hanging baskets.  However, he didnt get back to me till Thursday and I am now a bit worried about producing showy ones at such a late stage.  I have bought a lot of trailing begonias from a local nursery which are quite well on and in full flower, but after planting up a couple of baskets they still  look a bit sparse.  I am using 8 big begonias and 4/5 bacopa per basket (16inch)  I know eventually they will fill out, but should I infill with something else in the meantime? If so what?  I want it to look good but have aready quoted so not a lot of leeway cashwise.  However I dont want them to look poor as I would really like to get some knock-on/repeat next year.  Or is it just too late?  (mind you - here in the north east there are very few baskets/summer bedding out anywhere!!)

Thanks Sue. Yeah I put slow release fertiliser and water gel in. I am just wondering whether they are watering them enough. I left a note for the manager to say turn the water system on even tho it has been raining as they probably dont realise the walls and overhanngs will have sheltered them. I wish I had been able to persuade them to go for a weekly maintenance schedule. I will prob pop back and do it anyway.

Could not agree with you more John

Maybe the person is a timewaster and maybe nothing will come of the job, but you are running a commercial business here.  I would imagine that the person has a to do list as long as my arm and the hanging baskets are not at the very top of his agenda.  Also there is nothing to stop you getting back to the client to see if you can move things along quicker

Guys! Where's the love??

We are in a service industry and if people don't get back to us, so be it. Sometimes they are embarrassed to tell you bad news, sometimes they get tied up with more important things.  If you think payment is an issue ( and it may be with a pub) get a deposit to cover costs.

But the question was about supplying good looking baskets. If it's too late in the year, them tell him so.  If you manage a customers expectations, you can normaly work things out.

Frankly I have no idea about hanging baskets, never get involved with that stuff.  Just surprised at the direction the thread was taking!

hi Dave, I did the basket thing as an add on last year, put water retaining jel in as well as feed all mixed in the compost aranged in16 inch baskets, about 12 plants a basket, Auto water and they last till late sumer, (when it starts) they have gone grow mad, look good, but some flowers need more sun, customer is happy. money in bank.

Just an update on the pub hanging baskets!  Turns out they have at least three pubs and have asked me to do them all.  Just goes to show - you never know!  MInd you its not the best year to start trying to showcase hanging baskets.  I think the owner is finally understading the ongoing difficulties - especially after the flash flooding and gales in tyneside last week - three days after i had hung the first set.  They are trailing begonias and bacopa which are looking ok - lots of flower, thought the bacopa are small still - and did survive apart from one snapped begonia. When I am happy with them I will post a pic or two!!  Thanks again for everyones input - always good support in this site.
