Pond Project confusion

I have been asked by an existing client to construct a series of ponds and not really having done a 'series' of ponds before I wondered if anyone on here had any advice.

The biggest problem that I see is that the lowest, deepest and largest pond already exists and so they are, in essence, asking me to build 3 progressively shallower ponds which feed into each other and eventually into this existing one.  Ideally they would like the first, or shallowest, to be a reed bed with waterfalls between each pond!

Am I best to suggest that we just start again and dig one large pond with shallower shelves and then a small reed bed with a waterfall - or is this project not as complicated as I think?

  • Matt,

How large is the construction going to be and how are you planning to create the pools? Liner or concrete? What is the existing pool constructed from and how big is it?

  • Hi Dave,

The existing pond is 2m x 2.5m and 1m in depth and is liner construction.  The overall size of the 'series' ofadditional ponds can be up to 6m, so the client suggested three more ponds at 2m x 2.5m.  Their proposal was for the first pond/reed bed to be 250mm deep, the second pond 500mm deep and the third 750mm.  I think it would be best to use liners to construct the new ponds?

    Matt.

  • why vary the depths?

surely to get waterfalls its the slope of the site that matters?

obviously the top one for the reeds would be shallower, what are the others going to have in them?

i have done 2 linked before and the theory to link more is easy enough but to my mind the lay of the land is the critical bit.

  • David,

I have not constructed linking ponds before so this is new to me.  I did not really understand the concept of the different depths either.... the client suggested that this would attract different wildlife.  I would of thought this would not really be the case and that if it was then surely the same could be achieved with one large pond that encompassed shallow areas or shelves?
