What a gorgeous late summer splash of colour these penstemons are giving to my garden, the bees love them too.  They are easy to grow from seed, in fact I ended up with far too many this year and have enjoyed giving them away to friends.  They are slug and snail resistant, bushy and semi  evergreen ( you give them a spring pruning once the new shoots begin to show at ground level) I’ve also found them easy to propagate by taking late summer cuttings as long as you keep the cuttings in frost free conditions over winter. This is something worth doing as they generally only have a life of about 5 years. The ones I grew this year were from mixed seed, which means a few of them are rather tall and in the wrong places, so I’ll do some careful shuffling around in the autumn, ready for next year.  They like the sun or partial shade and are fairly hardy, except in extremely cold winters.
