Options for Surfaces for steep driveway

I have a client with a drive that's around 1in 10 and would love to have block paving. Any views from contractors on the steepest gradients for flexible and wet mortar methods. I guess coloured asphalt would be more long lasting but what ideas does anyone else have for a high end look. Thanks in advance.... S

  • This is a question for MICK G

  • Bonded or bound shingle would work. Tarmac would be fine. Tar and chip at a push. Avoid loose aggregates.

we have laid block paving on steeper driveways than 1:10

complete the work as per the normal specification for laying block paving and apply a sand stabiliser or seal the paving,  both of these products will hold the kiln dried jointing sand in place

alternatively you could use a natural stone product what are individually bedded on concrete then either jointed with a brush in resin jointing product or use traditional sand and cement to point the joints

or for a purely functional driveway you could tarmac it

  • Grid mat will hold gravel in place to 1:8ms
