OLD Westwood ride-on lift cables

Just replaced the two cables on my old Westy. They are for holding the deck level and can be adjusted accordingly. I've been messing about with it since 8pm and only just come in. I have also changed the blades. I'm sure this was a 10 minute job at one time but 30 years of weather, dirt, grass and rust add a little extra time :-)My question is... How do you hold the cables so you can turn the adjusting nut? I can't get anything on the hex end of the threaded bit because it is obscured by the spacer. If I turn the nut the cable just twists.Grrr....
