Need advice on laying artificial grass

Need advice on laying fake grass.

What is the right way and whats a cheap way but still a good finish on laying artificial grass?

I heard a concrete base, 4'' think or..

Remove exciting lawn and lay sharp sand, wacker plate and compress the sand and then lay the artificial grass on top and install tent pegs to hold it down?

Is this the right information?

Also how do you join up the joints?

You need to check with your chosen mfr really as many of them seem to be slightly different with what they recommend.
