Hi Gavin,
Glufosinate ammonium based products, such as one we sell called Whippet, contain 150g/L of the active ingredient, are termed as total contact weed killers. This means that they will kill off any part of the plant that they come into contact with. There are many brands on the market with ours being called Whippet and it comes in a 500ml or 10L container.
If you are careful about how you spray around the privet and the leylandii, you will not kill off the whole plant, but any leaves that get the chemical on will die off.
If you want some more information about this product or any of our other products, please get in touch.
Cheers Ollie

I wouldn't spray anywhere near the conifer hedge. You probably won't kill it, but any overspray or drift will damage areas that won't grow back.
I'd hand-treat it if there are other plants around, possibly even wrapping after treating to be sure.
Gavin, have you read through the links above?
I thought Whippet wasn't a systemic weedkiler, but I get confused with all the advice. Agricem were recommending Broadshot or Finalie in April, now Whippet!

Hi guys,
There seems to be some confusion about what we are recommending to control Mares Tail, so I will try and clear this up once and for all!
We have 2 products that are both very good at killing Mares Tail, Broadshot and Whippet. Both have their pros and cons.
Broadshot is a broadleaved selective, so it is safe to use on grass which makes it ideal for use in lawn or paddock areas, but it can also be used on bare areas or industrial sites. It is a contact systemic herbicide, so it will kill off what it touches and will travel around the plant in order to kill off the roots. On a small stand of the weed, it can completely kill it off with one application. However, this product is not safe to other non-target plants and shrubs, so if there was some drift onto these plants, there is a high chance that they will be killed. Also, it contains Triclopyr which can be taken up by the roots of non-target plants.
Whippet, which is an alternative brand to third party brands such as Kurtail®, KIBOSH, FINALE® and HARVEST®. It is a non-selective contact herbicide which will kill off any plant, or part of, that it comes into contact with. Because it is not systemic, if a small amount of drift got onto another plant, it would only burn off the part it touches. This obviously makes it much safer to use around shrubs and trees. As it is only a contact herbicide, it will not kill off the roots of the Mares Tail, but the roots of an average stand of the weed will become exhausted of their food source and should die after 2-4 applications over 2 years (if needed).
I hope this clears up the confusion about what we are recommending, but if anyone still has questions, please feel free to get in touch.
Cheers Ollie
