Making new Veg beds

I`m going to be making some raised veg beds soon out of sleepers, I was just wondering what would be the best thing i can put in them for super veg growing? Soil? Fert? Compost? Is there a 'best mix' or will just plain old boarders soil do?Thanks in advance gangJim

  • 50/50 good top soil and compost mix should do you just fine, adding some general fertiliser like fish, blood and bone or growmore would be beneficial and help get the veg off to a good start.

    Hi Jim

I constructed raised veggie borders last weekend - although I used scaffold boards and not sleepers.
I filled mine with about 70/30 soil and 2 year old horse manure - I'll report on progress but I'm expecting my veg to grow like stink and taste delicious.

    Hi Colin

I've been conditioning the soil for some time with sharp and fine washed sands.

  • We've made some raised veg beds out of scaffolding boards. I've dug into the ground we've placed it on and dug out the top soil, then forked over the subsoil before putting in some well rotted manure and mixing in the top soil. Takes time, but hoping for a good harvest!
