also notice that fuel is creeping back up (how many duty hikes are outstanding - is it just one ?)

  • As businesses go under and people stop spending...taxation is the only way to go as far as our political lame brains are concerned...so they penalise the productive sector! Great move?

Done, many thanks for the link Richard

  • Fuel prices are going just one way and that is up.  In the last Tory budget they were reduced by 1p per litre as tokenism for the masses, but the unregulated fuel suppliers took advantage of this cut accordingly.

We can bomb to death Iraq, Lybia et all, and spend billions of taxpayers money to try and control the market, and thousands of lives lost, but it is the economics of supply and demand.

A little counrty like us has no hope to influence, bar killing our own and locals.  As the EU we have some influence, although the USA and it's paymaster, China, call the shots these days.

We can debate it, but this country is really just bit-part players in this game.

  • "Fuel prices are going just one way and that is up..."

That is true for any finite resource. However, transportation costs are something that affects the cost of everything in the UK and quickly adds to inflation. If you don’t lobby your MP they assume that what they are doing is OK.

I suspect they do not intened to put fuel up by the amount stated but by a lesser amount so that when it happens everyone will say “only up by 10p a gallon…”

BTW the EU will implode shortly there is no money the whole thing is a charade which can only collapse.

Thanks Richard for providing the link. It'll soon be over £100 to fill the van up with fuel!

This is the reply I received back from my local MP just over 30 mins. after sending off the petition - the speed of his response is impressive, less so his reply - blame the previous government and do little about it:

    "Dear Stephen

Thank you for the email you sent me this morning and for outlining your concerns about the high cost of fuel. I fully appreciate how expensive fuel is in the UK. High fuel prices are largely the result of the high price of oil internationally and this inevitably leads to inflated costs on the forecourt. It puts a great strain on all of us and does little to help our economic recovery.

To help address this, we have announced measures to help mitigate the effects. It has cut the main duty rate by 1 penny in April this year and introduced a fair fuel stabiliser.

You may remember that the previous Labour Government introduced a fuel duty escalator which involved seven fuel duty increases. Three had already taken place at the time of the Budget, adding just over 3 pence to the price of petrol. There would also have been another increase of almost 5 pence per litre in April 2011.
Due to high oil prices, the escalator has been cancelled and all duty increases this year have been delayed. This has been paid for by an increase in tax on oil and gas producing companies, who are making unexpected profits on oil prices that are far higher than those they based their investment decisions on. In addition, the fuel stabiliser means that while oil prices are high, fuel duty will increase by inflation alone, and if the oil price falls below a set level on a sustained basis, the Government will increase fuel duty above inflation.

We want to work with a range of stakeholders in the oil and gas industry, and road transport organisations who have been affected by fuel costs, to make sure a fuel stabiliser that actually works is put in place. I believe recent discussions with the oil industry about the key points they are now keen to see on the table, including the strike price, were considered to be fruitful.

I understand that the Fair Fuel e-petition on the Government’s main website (www.direct.gov.uk) has now reached more than 100,000 signatories. Any e-petition that gathers this level of support could be debated in the House of Commons. I understand that the House of Commons Backbench Business Committee has reviewed the request but unfortunately there is insufficient time over the next month to have a debate.  However, the committee has not ruled out a debate in the future and I am sure that they are very aware of the importance of this topic.

We have postponed the planned inflation-only fuel duty rise from April 2011 to January 2012. It is my understanding that the Government still plans to proceed with this rise. This increase should be seen in the context of Ministers abolishing the last Government’s fuel escalator and replacing it with the fair fuel stabiliser that I outlined above. The overall effect of these measures means that by 2015-16, pump prices could be approximately 6.7p per litre lower than under the fuel duty escalator.

I will try to attend the debate on the 15th November, subject to parliamentary commitments, and will keep your comments in mind when debating this important issue.

Thank you once again for taking the time to contact me and please do not hesitate to do so in future should you require any further information or assistance.

    Best wishes"

  • Yup that's standard "go **** yourself reply" he didn't even write it just copied it straight to you, or rather one of his wonks did.

..It amazes me the contempt that these idiots hold for their constituents. Do they really think we are as stupid as they are?

  • i was mightly impressed with the length of Stephen's reply.

this is the reply from my MP, at least they addressed him by name and may attend the debate.

    Dear Constituent

Thank you for contacting me about the Fair Fuel e-petition.

I fully appreciate how expensive fuel is in the UK. High fuel prices are largely the result of the high price of oil internationally and this inevitably leads to inflated costs on the forecourt.  It puts a great strain on all of us and does little to help our economic recovery.

I understand that the House of Commons Backbench Business Committee has reviewed the request to debate this subject. I am pleased that the Committee has decided that the Fair Fuel e-petition will be debated in the House of Commons on Tuesday 15 November.

Thank you once again for taking the time to contact me.
