Hello all,

Recently I've taken down several trees, mainly conifers. Typically I sell the wood on but this year the prices have dropped by about 55% so I'm doing all the work with no return.

So I've decided if I can split the wood myself I can then sell the split wood.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm looking to spend between £300-£500 depending on the quality of the build etc.

What do you mean the prices have dropped by 55%, are you talking about the price of cordwood?

The company I sell the wood onto have dropped their buying price - but what has upset me is that they have upped their selling price! Win win I think they call it. But I'm feeling ripped off

Best just to process and sell the wood yourself mate, thats what i do, only on a small scale though but its profitable. We cut the logs using either a bench saw on anything up to about 4" in diameter and chainsaws on anything bigger then just splt it with a Fiskars X27. I find using an axe to be much faster than using a splitter, especially if you have someone helping you, one person uses the axe, the other stes the logs onto the cutting block, this way we can split a log approx every 4 seconds....easy!

Thanks Chris like you this will only be on a small scale. I suppose it is the cheaper initial option to go with the axe but probably will be working on my own.

i do exactly the same, keeping stuff we clear and i have a friend who is a tree surgeon who is more than happy to dump stuff on us rather than paying to get rid of it. I invested in a hydraulic splitter about 3 years ago, definetly worth it. runs off of a beaver breaker hydraulic pack, which i already had but you can pick one up for about 300-400 on ebay. Electric are a waste of time. I have regular customers and i also have a supplier i can buy spilt wood off of when stocks run low. It brings in about £3000 each winter, which is definetly valuableat that time of year. The guy i got it off of makes his own, ill see if i can find his details. theres a lot of chinese rubbish out there so be careful what you buy.

Thanks Thermo, just had a look on You Tube at the hydraulic splitter in operation, very impressive indeed.
