Ive took on a job it's a new build house the back garden is just lawn the customer wants me to rotovator 3 boarders in ive killer the grass couple of weeks ago I sprayed it plum lined the boarders. However the rotovator I was going to get to use on it on Monday I can't fetch till next weekend as it's far away bought off eBay. So I ask what are those tillers and small wheeled rotovators capable off the ground abit clayey but a fox managed to dig through it and under the fence this week so can't be that bad so basically would I be able to get away with renting a small rotovator or tiller for it? He wants to rotovate some soil improver in to . I can't walk away as there quite annoyed that I asked to move it back a week and said no can do.

Do you want to put a Rotavator straight over the grass? Is it the intention to blend it into the soil?

  • Well grass is dead round up took care of that so he wants to spread soil improver over dead grass boarders then rotovator lot in just wanted to know if small rotovator or tiller would handle it

Hard to say with out seeing it. From my experience a tiller isn't going to match a rotovator. I have got the tiller attachment on my stihl combi tool, and in the past I have turned the soil over to a forks depth by hand and then knocked it up finer with the tiller.

Depending on how the borders are, good old hand digging is sometimes as efficient. Is that an option?
  • Hire a Camon for the day (£45 ish). Wouldn't want to attempt with a 'tiller' type machine.

  • Won't let me hand turn customer

Camons round here are £70 a day £90 delivered plus a big depsoit we talking c8? Big chevron tyres

Will a small rotovator do it with round wheels not big tractor tyres?
  • with a tiller you wiill need to do maybe 3 passes on the same section to get the same result as 1 pass on a rotovator so yes :)

If you're trade or have an account, you'd never pay catalog price for any hire equipment.

Look for small independent hire shops. Prices much more realistic

    You need to
    - break down job into small tasks
    - identify what is needed (labour, supplies, hire costs, subbie costs) for each smaller task
    - price each task accordingly
    - consolidate and use for basis of full, itemised quote

That way you should be covered for all your needs including potential equipment needs  (and helps you think logically through the sequence of work)

For price difference, always go for +1 size of equipment if you are unsure.

C8 is good machine and will likely deal with your needs.

Its a new build = small. Therefore no point hiring a c8 as its just too big and also if it hits a hard patch it will shoot forward at such a speed that it will end up through the fence in next doors garden.

Get a tiller and go over a few times.
