Lights Out on Monday 4th August 2014

While not a landscaping topic, it is something many will want to know about and take part in as a mark of respect::

Late in the afternoon on August 3 1914, Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey stood at the window of his office in Whitehall and, as he watched the street lights being lit below, said: "The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime".

The moment Britain declared war on Germany will be commemorated in a "national moment of reflection" on Monday (August 4), with a mass public Lights Out event around the country.

Residents, businesses and other buildings are being asked to switch off their lights at 10pm to mark 100 years since the outbreak of World War One on August 4 1914 - leaving only a single light or candle on.

You can buy special candles to mark the occasion from places such as M&S, with proceeds going to British Legion etc

Puts all life's pettiness in its place................
